Our download test using a single large 6GB file saw the Synology DS1512+ provide a throughput of 108.7MB/s, or roughly the same as the older DS1511+. As both units can max out the Gigabit Ethernet connection in this test, the DS1512+ has no room for improvement.
The program copy test is comprised of many small non-compressed files (6104 files totaling 2.75GB). Here the NAS devices are limited by the CPU and RAM, not the Gigabit Ethernet connection. The DS1512+ only matched the performance of its predecessor, but even at 61.2MB/s, it was 8% faster than the Thecus N7700PRO.
The game copy evaluation uses a mixture of small and large compressed and uncompressed files. Again, when measuring download performance, we found that the DS1512+ fails to exceed the DS1511+ – if only by 0.8MB/s. That said, at 23.6MB/s, the DS1512+ was on par with or better than other high-end NAS devices we’ve tested.
