Director of Product Management Rob Caruso outlined some of what we can expect from the Google TV user interface in 2022. He didn’t make any firm early announcements, opting to provide a general guideline of Google’s research instead. Some of the new features could be related to fitness, offering integrations with Google fitness services (Google Fit, Fitbit) and third-party services. Caruso also mentioned improved integration with smart home controls, similar to the new features found on Android devices....

The OnePlus 10 Pro launched in China last week—it’s not being released in the US—with some impressive specs, including a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, a 5,000mAh battery, and a 120Hz refresh rate. But it certainly isn’t the most durable of devices. Nelson puts the phone through his usual routine, beginning with the scratch test. It performs pretty much as expected, showing lights scratches at level 6 and deeper ones at level 7....

Just 2fps separates the R9 390X and R9 390 with the former being just 5% faster in addition to being 7% faster than the R9 290X but 8% slower than the GTX 980. The R9 390 was 8% faster than the R9 290 but 7% slower than the GTX 970. The R9 380 only managed to match the R9 285 with 40fps at 1080p, though this was also enough to match the R9 280X....

IBM’s stature guaranteed the PC to initiate a level of standardization required for a technology to attain widespread usage. That same stature also ensured competitors would have unfettered access to the technical specifications of the Model 5150, since IBM was obligated to disclose such information under the Department of Justice 1956 consent decree, which the company operated under as an accommodation for its previous monopolistic practices. The third facet of the Model 5150’s enduring legacy came about from sourcing components via independent hardware vendors....

At 2560x1600, it’s clear that a high-end GPU is necessary, or at the very least a pair of mid-range cards. The HD 7970 averaged 34fps, while the GTX 680 was slightly slower with 31fps. The HD 7950 was impressive here with 32fps, making it the best value graphics card for playing Hitman: Absolution.

While they are easy and convenient to use, these buttons grant websites and apps permission to access certain information from your Google and Facebook accounts. Personal data varies but can include your user name, email address, real name, phone number, and friend lists. The Sign in with Apple button is a slightly different bird in that you have more control over your data. Apple only grants access to your name and email, but you have the option to use an alias for either....

The battery life could easily be extended through the use of the variety of battery saver options, including the abilities to shut off wireless access to some apps, and restrict their use of background CPU cycles. Tuning the device perfectly could see you achieve great battery life figures in general usage, though I achieved pretty good results without using these features. Out of the battery results above, the most impressive result is on Wi-Fi, where the Ascend Mate 7 lasts a very decent amount of time....

Unfortunately for Huawei, the real world isn’t a vacuum, and when faced with strong competition this year, the P10 struggles. When a top contender like the Galaxy S8 costs just $100 more, or a solid performer like the LG G6 is available at roughly the same price, I see little reason to grab the P10 over a phone with a superior feature set. On the positive side, the P10’s aluminium unibody, largely unchanged from the P9, is still compact and premium....

The P9’s battery results will also be interesting as there is a HiSilicon SoC inside rather than the usual Qualcomm silicon. The Kirin 955 does use a modern 16nm FinFET manufacturing process, so it won’t have a process disadvantage compared to Qualcomm, but we do already know that the Snapdragon 820 made big strides in performance per watt while cutting down throttling issues. In the above battery benchmarks, the Huawei P9 puts up a standard performance for its SoC and battery capacity....

The Core i5 was 18% faster than the Core i3 when measuring single thread performance and 51% faster when measuring multi-threading performance. The Core i7 and i5 delivered the same single thread score while the i7 was 33% faster when measuring multi-threading performance. PCMark 7’s system test showed the Core i5 and i7 delivering similar scores while the larger cache of the Core i3-4350 allowed it to be 2% faster than the i3-4160....

The new Intel chipsets include the H55, H57 and Q57 which are all quite similar in terms of specifications. All three offer six SATA 3.0 Gbit/s ports, while the H57 and Q57 boast eight PCI Express 2.0 lanes and fourteen USB 2.0 ports. The H55 looses a few USB 2.0 ports, supporting just twelve, and drops a few PCI Express 2.0 lanes for a total of six. The only other differences between these new chipsets have to do with the features that they support....

MaxxPI² was used to measure both single and multi-thread processor performance. The Core i5 750 fairs well in this test, just a second behind the Core i7 920 for the multi-thread test, though in relative terms that translates to a 9% performance decrease. The Core i5 750 was also slower than the Phenom II X4 965. These results relate directly to those above. This time we are looking at the performance measured in kilobytes per second....

The i7-3820 is particularly intriguing because of its sub-$300 retail price – far less than other chips in the series. For instance, the Core i7-3960X has an MSRP of $999 and sells for more like $1,049, while the i7-3930K has an MSRP of $583 and is fetching $599 at e-tail. Both are six-core CPUs operating over 3GHz with massive 15MB and 12MB L3 caches. At roughly half the price of the 3930K, we expected Intel to butcher the i7-3820, and while that’s partially true, the 3820 remains an impressive specimen with four cores operating at 3....

Like Braswell, Broadwell is a 14nm die shrink. Broadwell is a derivative of Haswell, which was built using the 22nm process. Naturally, moving to a smaller process results in a smaller die and lower power consumption. However, as is often the case with Intel’s ‘Tick’ updates, a few minor tweaks have also been applied. The advantage of this minor update is that it is compatible with the existing LGA1150 platform, at least when using an Intel 9-series chipset....

Looking at the Premiere results we see that the Core i7-8700K is a good step forward from the recently released 7800X. It’s both faster and cheaper. Compared to the Ryzen 7 1700, the 8700K was 8% faster but it also costs 20% more, though it is a much better value than the R7 1800X. Overclocking muddies the water a bit so we’re not going to focus on that for this review....

Officials postponed the original groundbreaking scheduled for July due to funding delays related to the CHIPS and Science Act. The event marks a formal milestone in Intel’s fabrication roadmap and is a significant step toward the company’s ability to compete with existing semiconductor manufacturers worldwide. Passed in August, the CHIPS Act will provide $52.7 billion in incentives and tax relief for US-based companies engaged in semiconductor R&D, manufacturing, and workforce development....

Much of Intel’s event will undoubtedly focus on the mobile versions of Alder Lake—Alder Lake-P and Alder Lake-M—which will likely go up against the Ryzen 6000 laptop CPUs that AMD is expected to reveal during its product livestream. Another Alder Lake product is expected to be the non-K versions of the company’s Alder Lake-S desktop CPUs. Asus and Colorful exposed some of the chips’ specs ahead of time last week, appearing to confirm rumors that the Core i5-12600 and lower will lack the 12th-gen series’ efficiency cores....

The SSD 510 Series came about last year using a Marvell controller, making it the first Intel SSD able to utilize the SATA 6Gb/s interface. However with the exceptional Crucial m4 on the picture (using the same Marvell chip), we didn’t care much for the SSD 510 Series. Today’s pricing puts the 128GB m4 at just $177, which works out to be $1.38 per gigabyte. On the other hand, the Intel equivalent costs $280 making it much more costly at $2....

On Tuesday, Intel launched its Raptor Lake processors with double the amount of E-cores compared to their Alder Lake (AL) counterparts, and each cluster of four E-cores now has access to 4MB of L2 cache (vs. 2MB on AL). The P-core count remains the same across the lineup, although they use the new Raptor Cove architecture. Intel didn’t go into much detail on the new arch but mentioned it comes with improved speed paths and 2MB L2 cache per core, compared to 1....
