The Viotek GFT27DB aims to be a flat TN version of their curved VA GN27D, so specs are very similar. We’re looking at a 27-inch panel, 1440p resolution, and 144 Hz maximum refresh rate. This monitor supports FreeSync with low framerate compensation, and we can confirm it works perfectly with both AMD and Nvidia GPUs. With this new monitor opting for a TN panel instead of a VA, gamers are treated to a flat display which we personally prefer at this size....

Of course, the EX2 Ultra didn’t break any speed records, but it was never meant to. Nonetheless, the EX2 Ultra is surprisingly fast because it’s unbelievably affordable. The base model comes in at just $160 and although it’s diskless, you can expect to pay around twice that for a similar spec model from QNAP or Synology. The Synology DS216 for example costs $270 and has half as much RAM. The cheapest two-bay Synology NAS costs $150 for the DS216se and while it’s supported by a much more impressive operating system, its lack of power probably won’t make up for that fact....

When compared to basic DDR4 memory, that’s still expensive at around twice the price of DDR4-2666, but the DDR5 memory is much faster. The question is, how does it compare to premium DDR4 memory like the dual-rank CL14 3200 stuff we often use for benchmark testing, which costs around $50 per module, or $70 if you opt for 3600 memory. Sweet-spot DDR4-3600 CL16 memory costs around $35 per 8GB module, which makes the $44 for DDR5-4800 not a crazy premium, assuming we’re looking at comparable performance....

Microsoft’s trailblazing Windows 95 was barely a year old, Nintendo had just introduced the N64, and those with a reason to have a cell phone actually used it to talk on. Launched after less than two months of development from Israeli company Mirabilis, it predated and influenced many of the popular chat programs of the era including AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger. Incredibly enough, ICQ has also outlasted its chief competitors: AIM shut down at the end of 2017, Yahoo’s communications program bit the bullet in mid-2018 and Microsoft laid its Messenger client to rest in 2014....

For the record, I don’t care if you skip the update – hell, I might pass on it too – nor do I care if it’s the most failtastic operating system in Windows’ 26-year history. While certain anonymous posters might try to convince you otherwise, I have nothing to gain or lose from the launch of Windows 8. However, I believe your opinion should be formed by facts, not irrational rhetoric parroted online by so-called power users and companies that want to sell you third-party programs....

The Mi Max’s massive 6.44-inch display is IPS LCD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. A 1440p resolution would be ideal for a display of this size, as density would then roughly match a 1080p display at 5.0-inches, however for the price I couldn’t expect more. The Mi Max delivers good sharpness and text is free of any jagged edges so that’s a good thing. Analyzing display quality further, brightness falls marginally below an ideal value of 500 nits, however outdoor visibility is still respectable....

While movie-licensed games don’t have the best reputation in the gaming industry (historically speaking) Funcom has proven they know what they’re doing with Dune: Spice Wars. Spice Wars first launched into Early Access in April as a 4X strategy title set in, you guessed it, the Dune universe. The iconic planet of Arrakis, to be specific. In Spice Wars, players take control of one of Arrakis’ four factions – House Atreides, House Harkonnen, The Smugglers, and the Fremen – in a vicious battle for supremacy....

When testing with the x264 HD Benchmark once again we found no difference in performance between the Intel H55 motherboards being tested, as they all rendered 50fps. Finally when measuring the time it took to convert a 700MB avi file to the mpeg format we found that all four Intel H55 motherboards took over 12 minutes. The Gigabyte H55M-UD2H was slightly slower than the other three boards.

With seven P55 motherboards on offer already, EVGA looks to have something for everyone, or almost. Their most basic model the EVGA P55 LE still costs $160, while the most expensive ones can go beyond the $300 mark. The P55 FTW is likely their most sensible high-end motherboard and therefore this is the board we chose to look at. Ghost Recon Wildlands isn’t the most optimized game to be released in 2017, that’s for sure. Here the GTX 580 really struggled to provide playable performance using the lowest possible settings at 1080p and there were a number of graphical glitches as well. Like Dirt 4, we see decent results when testing with Mass Effect Andromeda. Here the GTX 580 managed an average of 49fps at 1080p using the medium quality preset and a minimum or 1% low result of 44fps also meant that gameplay was quite smooth....

Netflix is well aware that lots of subscribers share their accounts with others. Today we will be looking at the Acer Timeline 4810T notebook, a 14-inch ultra-portable that aims to bridge the gap between underpowered netbooks and bulky notebooks, while retaining the battery longevity found in the latest generation of netbooks. I couldn’t pass on taking a look at this tiny yet apparently mighty portable SSD. Dubbed the SE730, it weighs a mere 33g (1.1oz) and measures 72.7mm long, 44mm wide and 12.2mm thick (2.8" x 1.7" x 0.4"). Leveraging Eero’s TrueMesh technology (Eero Built-in), the new Echos can not only connect to Eero routers but also act as wireless mesh nodes. Even better, you might have the start of a mesh network in your home already if you have one or more fourth-generation Echo speakers. Since TrueMesh is a software-based innovation, Eero can update compatible older devices that are already out in the wild. Eero cofounder and CEO Nick Weaver told The Verge the company would push out over-the-air updates to older Echos “in the coming months....

But PowerPoint slides and executive summaries are only good to show the chips on paper; it’s the actual hardware itself that will tell the final story. And from what I experienced using and benchmarking Mullins in the Discovery reference tablet, the story is one that paints AMD as a winner. In CPU-heavy benchmarks, AMD’s Mullins (A10 Micro-6700T) tablet was, on average, 31% faster than an Intel Bay Trail-T Z3740 tablet....

Microsoft Excel 2007 is well optimized for quad-core processors and as you can see the Phenom II X4 910 and even the old Phenom X4 9950 performs very well in this test. Unfortunately the Phenom II X2 550 and Athlon II X2 250 processors were not all that exceptional here. The Phenom II X2 550 lagged behind the Pentium E5400 while the Athlon II X2 250 was some 30% slower....

Priced at $245 at the time of release, our tests showed that the Phenom II X4 955 was often a faster than the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 which remains to this day a more expensive alternative. In fact, today the Phenom can be had for just $200, while Intel is still asking ~$320 for the Q9650. Without any challenge to present at the Core i7 performance level, AMD is trying to pressure Intel in the value segment before their Core i5 CPUs make it to market....

The Radeon HD 6970 used roughly the same amount of power as the GeForce GTX 570 consuming 1% more when stressed and 4% less at idle. Given that both graphics cards provide similar performance, this time around it seems they are equally matched. The Radeon HD 6970 got quite hot when load testing with FurMark as it reached 90 degrees, which is slightly higher than the 87 degrees reached by the Radeon HD 5870....
