The Asrock Z87 Extreme11/ac took 3.96 seconds to complete the MonteCarlo work load, four milliseconds slower than the Asrock Fatal1ty Z87 Killer. The Z87 Extreme11/ac was only one millisecond faster than the Fatal1ty Z87 Killer in our PowerPoint test, so it’s safe enough to say both motherboards provided the same performance. The MSI Z87 XPower pulled ahead of the Z87 Extreme11/ac in our 7-zip benchmark, while it was considerably faster than the Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H....

The GeForce GTX 580 was 6% slower than the Radeon HD 5970 in Aliens vs. Predator at 2560x1600, and it commanded a whopping 39% lead over the GTX 480 while outpacing the Radeon HD 5870 by 45%.

While the GTX 580’s power levels are a nice advancement, we saw the biggest change in operating temperature. Under full load, the GeForce GTX 580 reached just 81 degrees, making it even cooler than the Radeon HD 5830. That’s hard to believe in itself, but it’s made even more impressive by the fact that the GeForce GTX 580 remained relatively quiet when stress testing.

The ROG PG32UQ – basically the non-X variant – is the same type of monitor at 32-inch 4K 144Hz IPS, intended for high end gaming with features like adaptive sync and variable overdrive. Instead of providing full HDR through a 1152-zone mini-LED backlight, Asus has opted for a lower cost edge-lit HDR setup giving us DisplayHDR 600 instead of 1400. Using the exact same setting when running the built-in benchmark we see a different story when driving the Batmobile around. There is a clear bottleneck at 1080p which limits all cards to between 30 and 34fps for the minimum frame rate. You won’t often see just 3fps separating the R9 280X from the GTX 980 Ti when comparing minimum frame rates. The averages weren’t much better as the GTX 980 Ti was just 6fps faster than the R9 280X....

This time the Radeon HD 6990 outgunned the GeForce GTX 590 by 4fps with an average of 57fps. The Radeon HD 6970 Crossfire and GeForce GTX 580 SLI configurations both averaged 64fps.

The Radeon HD 5750 was only a fraction faster than the Radeon HD 4770, while the Radeon HD 4830 was noticeably slower. Both the Radeon HD 4830 and GeForce 9800 GT hit a minimum frame rate of 33fps, while the old Radeon HD 3850 matched the new Radeon HD 5670 with a minimum of just 29fps.

In a statement tweeted yesterday, the UK’s Ministry of Defence Press Office said it was aware of a breach of the Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts and was investigating the matter. “We take information security extremely seriously and are resolving the issue. Until the investigation is complete it would be inappropriate to comment further,” it wrote. The hackers who took over the Twitter account changed the name, bio, and cover photo....

On Thursday, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced it would be taking a page out of the Food and Drug Administration’s rulebook and applying it to internet service providers (ISP). A proposed set of rules approved by all four commissioners would require ISPs to provide consumers with more transparency about their services with labeling modeled after food nutrition labels. “In a grocery store, nutrition labels make it easy to compare calories & carbohydrates,” said FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel this morning via Twitter....

When left to idle, these systems all consumed roughly the same amount of power. The Celeron J1900 pulled 27 watts while the Athlon 5350 used 28 watts. Running Prime95 to place full load on all cores/threads, the Celeron J1900 used the least amount of power at 32 watts. The Athlon 5350 required 38% more power as it consumed 44 watts, though this was still 17% less than the Celeron G1820....

As you likely know, while manufacturers claim impressive peak I/O performance out of the box, this performance can diminish over time. Unlike a conventional hard drive, any write operation made to an SSD is a two-step process: a data block must be erased and then written to. Obviously if the drive is new and unused there will be nothing to erase and therefore the first step can be bypassed, but this only happens once unless the drive is trimmed....

The Adobe Photoshop CS5 benchmark also saw the FX processors provide decent performance gains over the Phenom II. Although the six-core FX-6100 was only slightly faster than the Phenom II X6 1100T, the eight core FX-8150 and FX-8120 processors provided significant gains and were able to match the Core i5-2500K. The encoding performance was far less impressive as we found that clock for clock the FX processors were slower than the current Phenom II processors....

During the Intel Creator Challenge PC Modding Finale, overclocker Allen ‘Splave’ Golibersuch managed to reach the 8.2 GHz frequency on the Core i9-13900K, which features 24 cores comprising eight Performance cores and 16 Efficiency cores. For comparison, the record overclock for the Core i9-12900K is 7.6GHz. When not using exotic cooling like liquid nitrogen (LN2), the Raptor Lake chip is able to reach a still very impressive 5.8 GHz—5.5 GHz with all eight P cores—through Intel’s Thermal Velocity Boost....

The Agility 4 256GB was found to be 45% faster than the Crucial v4 256GB in our single large file copy test with a throughput of 138MB/s versus 95MB/s. That said, the Agility 4 was still 33% slower than the Vertex 4 and 19% slower than the Crucial m4. On the other hand, the Crucial v4 256GB was 13% slower than the Intel SSD 320 Series 300GB and 18% slower than the old Samsung 470 Series 256GB while being only 5% and 13% faster than the Patriot Pyro 120GB and the Torqx 2 128GB....
