When Nvidia Senior VP Jeff Fisher gave us a brief look at the RTX 3090 Ti during CES at the start of the year and revealed some of its specs, he assured fans that more details would follow “later this month.” But January passed without a word from team green about the monster GPU. Now, after seemingly refusing to answer questions relating to the RTX 3090 Ti, The Verge has managed to get Nvidia to go on the record, though it’s not exactly an enlightening statement....

The RTX 4080 was to be offered in two variants – one with 9,728 CUDA cores and 16GB of GDDR6X memory and a lower-tiered spec featuring 7,680 CUDA cores alongside 12GB of Micron GDDR6X memory – and launch in the middle of October starting at $1,199 and $899, respectively. Public outcry regarding the lower-spec card prompted a rethink from Nvidia, and in November the company “unlaunched” the 12GB RTX 4080 before it was ever released because it “wasn’t named right....

The Trion 150 offers a small performance boost over the Trion 100 in the PCMark 7 importing pictures test and while it is now slightly faster than the BX200, it still trails the 850 Evo. The Trion 150 delivered almost no performance gain over the Trion 100, making it considerably slower than the Crucial BX200 and almost half the speed of the 850 Evo. This time the Trion 150 was actaully slower than the Trion 100 with a throughput of just 70MB/ while the Samsung SSD 850 Evo was good for 126MB/s....

The N-Frame-OP01 is an add-on monitor mount for the company’s open-frame chassis, effectively transforming the case into a true all-in-one computing solution. The bracket attaches to the back of the chassis and supports standard 75mm x 75mm and 100mm x 100mm VESA hole patterns. Open-air systems have plenty of pros and cons that you’ll want to weigh before making the jump from a traditional case. Cooling generally isn’t a major concern as everything is out in the open, but this could backfire if you’re accustomed to highly controlled air channels to combat hot spots....

Starting with the good stuff, the Adreno 405 smokes the Adreno 305/306 in the Snapdragon 400/410 by a whopping 175% on average, which equates to a 40% advantage onscreen when factoring in the jump from a 720p to 1080p display. This basically means you’ll achieve better frame rates in intensive 3D games on a Snapdragon 615 device like the Oppo R5, even with a higher resolution display. On the other hand, the Adreno 405 is 3% slower than the Adreno 320 in the Snapdragon 600, which is a marginal difference that keeps the two SoCs trading blows....

One of the only issues with parts such as the Core i3-12100, Core i5-12400 and Core i7-12700 is that Intel locks them down, meaning there’s no way to tinker with them to boost performance by overclocking them. Out of the box performance is still excellent, and if you’re building a new PC it’s hard to ignore what these locked Alder Lake CPUs have to offer. It’d be hard to ignore if the boost was in excess of 20% faster, and even more so when it can exceed 50% in some instances....

Digital media players look to be the way of the future, but their development has been slow and somewhat painful, particularly for the consumer. For years I have personally been trying to find a digital media player that can do it all with aplomb, but so far no such device seems to exist. The swift adoption of HD content has also become a challenge for media players, as we are now asking a lot more from the hardware that drives them....

Ford plans to demonstrate a new pedestrian safety system for its latest automobiles this week. It takes the form of a mobile app that pedestrians use to alert Ford drivers’ infotainment dashboards without relying on line-of-sight. The app uses BLE to communicate with vehicles that support Ford SYNC, telling drivers whether a pedestrian or cyclist is nearby. Eventually, it could also alert drivers to construction sites. The tech leverages T-Mobile’s 5G Advanced Network Solution with hyperscale computing....

The M6e’s quoted 770MB/s read and 580MB/s write speeds had us expecting big things in our custom file transfer tests, but the drive didn’t deliver with only 280MB/s. The M6S and M6M also disappointed, often struggling to compete with dated products such as the Crucial m4 mSATA and OCZ Vertex 4. To be fair, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised as the OCZ RevoDrive 350 is rated for up to 1800MB/s and we only get 630MB/s....

As you likely know, while manufacturers claim impressive peak I/O performance out of the box, this performance can diminish over time. Unlike a conventional hard drive, any write operation made to an SSD is a two-step process: a data block must be erased and then written to. Obviously if the drive is new and unused there will be nothing to erase and therefore the first step can be bypassed, but this only happens once unless the drive is trimmed....

Many studies have been carried out on working from home and how it impacts productivity. Nearly all of them show that the increased happiness felt by employees translates into more efficient staff, but it seems managers don’t agree. A new study from Microsoft illustrates how the views of workers and their bosses differ significantly: 87% of staff say working from home increases productivity, but 85% of their supervisors disagree. Bosses believe the move to remote/hybrid work has made it challenging to have confidence that employees are being productive....

After previewing the system at the Build conference in May, Microsoft is now introducing a new device designed for Arm development: Project Volterra has been officially released as the Windows Dev Kit 2023, a compact PC that contains – according to Microsoft – everything developers need to create apps for the Arm edition of Windows. Windows Dev Kit 2023 has been “purpose-built” to help developers create Windows apps for Arm, says Microsoft....

The exploit is related to a feature in iOS 15 that allows Find My to work for several hours after a device has been turned off. Specifically, chips used for Bluetooth, near field communication (NFC) and ultra-wideband (UWB) continue to run in a low-power mode (LPM) even after a user-initiated shutdown. This low-power mode is different from the one indicated by the yellow battery icon. In assessing LPM features, researchers found that the Bluetooth LPM firmware is neither signed nor encrypted....

Traditional metallic and organic conductors are comprised of straight, closely packed rows of molecules or atoms. This allows electrons to flow through the material and makes them electrically conductive. Until recently, scientists thought a material had to have this straight-line structure to conduct electricity efficiently but that apparently is not the case. Jiaze Xie, the first author on a paper describing the material, started experimenting with materials that were discovered years ago but were largely ignored by the scientific community....

The R9 280X averages 51fps in Tomb Raider at 1920x1200 while the GTX 770 was slightly slower with 50fps. The MSI R9 280X Gaming was the slowest of the factory overclocked R9 280X cards with 52fps, on par with the HD 7970 GHz Edition. The HIS R9 280X iPower IceQ X² Turbo was faster with 54fps, while the Sapphire Vapor-X Tri-X OC R9 280X, Asus R9 280X DirectCU II TOP and Gigabyte R9 280X WindForce 3X OC averaged between 55 and 56fps....

The revision one cards feature a black plastic fan shroud which was upgraded to a black aluminum fan shroud for revision two. Specification-wise the revision one and revision two OC cards are exactly the same with the exception of the black fan shroud. This means the Gigabyte R9 280X WindForce 3X OC operates its core at 1100MHz, while the GDDR5 memory remains unchanged at 6000MHz. Compared to the Asus card we have on hand, the R9 280X WindForce 3X OC’s core operates 3% higher while the memory is 6% slower....

The goal was to see how the most affordable new Ryzen (R5 3600) and then most expensive 3rd-gen processor (R9 3900X) compared to the Core i9-9900K, the world’s best gaming CPU. In short, the Ryzen 5 3600 proved to be the best value option for gamers, more often than not matching the Ryzen 9 3900X. Using an RTX 2080 Ti with medium quality settings at 1080p, the affordable Ryzen was just 14% slower on average when compared to the 9900K....

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’re seeing AMD APUs in laptops; even today you can buy a low-end notebook with a Stoney Ridge APU inside, complete with all the wonders of an Excavator-based CPU. It’s at the high end that AMD has been absent for generations, mostly because of their slow and inefficient CPU architecture, which allowed Intel to command the mobile throne for years. With Ryzen and the Zen architecture, everything has changed for AMD....

As a quick recap, what we have on hand are two XMG Core 15 laptops using essentially the same chassis. On the left, we have an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H, while the laptop on the right is equipped with an Intel Core i7-10750H. Elsewhere specifications are identical with 16GB of dual-channel DDR4 memory, the same 512GB M.2 SSD, same 1080p 144Hz display and crucially, the same Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU....
