At first glance, the Duovox Mate Pro appears to be little more than an ordinary – if not basic – point-and-shoot camera. Under the hood, however, is a Sony Starvis 2 1/1.8’’ back-illuminated CMOS image sensor capable of capturing video in 2K and stills (jpeg and raw) at 5MP (3,200 x 1,800 resolution). Duovox went with a sensor featuring a low megapixel count but big pixels. The larger the photosite area, the more light the sensor can capture....
Last week saw Twitter’s former head of security, Peiter Zatko, who goes by the nickname “Mudge,” allege that his former employer lied about its security protocols and fake accounts. Unsurprisingly, Musk’s legal team moved quickly to subpoena Zatko to testify in the upcoming trial in which the billionaire will try to escape the deal without paying a $1 billion termination fee. Musk’s lawyer is now asking the judge for the trial to be delayed for several weeks so Zatko’s claims can be examined....
The incident revolves around Musk sending Ukraine shipments of SpaceX Starlink terminals that allow its citizens to continue accessing the internet in cities under siege. Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov says there are now around 150,000 active Starlink users per day in Ukraine. Musk’s generous act was condemned by Dmitry Rogozin, the head of space agency Roscosmos, in the Russian’s Telegram channel over the weekend. “Elon Musk is involved in supplying the fascist forces in Ukraine with military communication equipment,” he wrote, describing the Ukrainian military as “Nazis....
The Washington Post, citing three people familiar with the matter, writes that Musk’s biggest issue is a familiar one: fake accounts. The Tesla boss put the Twitter deal temporarily on hold back in May until he had confirmation that spam and fake accounts on the site really do represent less than 5% of its userbase, as stated in a company filing. The problem reared its head again last month when Musk said he could abandon the deal as Twitter is “actively resisting and thwarting” his information rights by refusing to provide information on the number of fake, spam, and bot accounts on the site....
After a 4-month hiatus, Emotet is again active as one of the most dangerous botnet operations out there. Cyber-criminals are using the network to spread malicious software and other potential infections, with a new trick designed to bypass protections in Microsoft Office applications. Emotet was considered one of the most widespread infections until July 2022, when the network suddenly stopped spamming campaigns and third-party malware distribution. Now, the botnet is back in “distribution mode,” according to the research group Cryptolaemus....
Those of you keen on playing Quake Champions will be best served by the GeForce GT 1030 and despite this being an AMD sponsored title, the GeForce graphics card was vastly superior. Using the low quality preset the GT 1030 was 23% faster for the average frame rate and 35% faster for the 1% low. Things got significantly worse for the Radeon GPU when using the high quality preset. Here the GT 1030 was 60% faster on average and incredibly 93% faster for the 1% low....
Earlier this month, the Ethereum Foundation announced its momentous “Merge” would finally come in mid-September. Ethereum developers have long planned to switch the cryptocurrency from its current proof-of-work model to proof-of-stake. Under proof-of-work, Ethereum’s algorithm made ordinary PC graphics cards uniquely well-suited to mining it. For the last several years, miners have bought GPUs for mining rigs instead of gaming or other workloads, inflating their prices. The pandemic supply disruptions of the previous couple of years made things worse, pushing some cards toward double their MSRP....

The Virgin Orbit “Start Me Up” mission launched from Spaceport Cornwall on January 9 in front of more than 2,000 spectators, becoming the first-ever space flight attempt to launch in the UK. The first part of the mission saw a converted Boeing 747 called Cosmic Girl take off successfully and release the LauncherOne rocket, which carried nine satellites, off the southwest coast of Ireland at 6:11 PM ET. The rocket’s NewtonThree engine ignited successfully, and the first stage headed toward orbit....
Recently we were benchmarking the non-XT PowerColor RX 5700 Red Devil, and while that was a very nice graphics card, at $390 it was priced a bit too close to entry-level 5700 XTs, making it a bit of a tough sell. However many were quick to point out that the card can be flashed with a 5700 XT BIOS and make it fully worth the sticker price. Apparently doing so can give you XT-like performance, while saving you $50 when compared to the equivalent 5700 XT Red Devil graphics card....
We had a closer look at the new Lightning EV and learned as much as we could about the electric truck without driving it. Unfortunately, this model was just a prototype (apparently, just one of two), so Ford wasn’t risking it on the open road, so we had to be content with poking, prodding, and crawling all over the truck. We came away thinking that it may be the most high-tech truck so far, but others are popping up on the horizon to claim that title for themselves....
With that, Intel’s low-power mobile chips have finally transitioned from a dual-core to quad-core design for the first time. This has been achieved while keeping within the same 15-watt TDP as previous low-power U-series chips, essentially allowing for a big jump in performance without a corresponding hit to battery life. Before we discuss the specific changes to Intel’s new processors, let’s talk a bit about the basics, in particular Intel’s confusing product line for 2017....
World of Tanks is surprisingly demanding at 1680x1050 even if we know the game has recently received some pretty major visual upgrades. We found it interesting how the Radeon R9 290 only beat the R9 280X by a few fps, the R9 280X was just a few frames faster than the R9 270, and how the R7 260X wasn’t able to deliver playable performance. Nvidia cards appeared to deliver more consistent performance with the GTX 750 Ti averaging a healthy 55fps, while the GTX 760 smoked the AMD equivalent with 88fps and the GTX 780 exceeded 100fps by a wide margin....
Technology For those that haven’t been keeping up with adaptive sync, here’s a quick refresher on what it brings to the table. Traditional monitors (without adaptive sync) have a fixed refresh rate, which sees the display update its image at the same interval regardless of what your PC is doing. For 60 Hz monitors, this means the image is always updated every 1/60th of a second. The issue with a fixed refresh rate is that when you’re playing games, your graphics card isn’t always outputting frames at the same interval as your monitor’s refresh rate....
That said, it was still disappointing to see it only matched the performance of the GeForce 9600 GT at 1680x1050, while at 1920x1200 it was found to be 3fps slower. Needless to say it was much slower than both the GeForce 9800 GT and Radeon HD 4770 – about 22% and 19% respectively at the lowest tested resolution. In Resident Evil 5 the GeForce 240 closely matched the 9800 GT, though as has been the case throughout this review, it was still considerably slower than the comparatively-priced Radeon HD 4770 at both tested resolutions....
The overclocked GTX 970 SLI cards delivered just 28fps at 3840x2160 in Crysis 3, which is barely playable in our opinion. The overclock allowed them to deliver 17% more performance than the standard GTX 970 SLI setup and 75% more performance than a single non-overclocked GTX 970. Despite that improvement, once overclocked the GTX 970 SLI cards were still 10% slower than the overclocked R9 290 Crossfire setup. Taking overclocking out of the equation, the GTX 970 SLI setup was 11% slower than the R9 290 in Crossfire....
The Metro Redux results are very unusual as the GTX 960 was just 4% slower than the GTX 970 at 1920x1200, but 33% slower at 2560x1600. Moreover, it was 34% faster than the R9 285 at 1920x1200 but just 8% faster at 2560x1600. The GTX 960 averaged 52fps at 1920x1200 – 11% faster than the GTX 760 yet still 31% slower than the GTX 970. Compared to the R9 285, the GTX 960 was 21% faster, but 2% slower than the R9 280X....
The GeForce GTX 570 managed an impressive 5317pts when using the “performance” settings on the just-released 3DMark 11 benchmark suite. This meant that the GeForce GTX 570 was less than a percent faster than the GTX 480 and around 12% slower than the GTX 580. It was also 23% faster than the GTX 470 and 21% faster than the Radeon HD 5870.
