This is why Arm dominates the mobile processor market with almost every major release built on top of its architecture. We’re talking billions of chips used on phones, smart TVs, embedded applications, biometrics systems, laptops, and tablets. But why is this the case, and why have other architectures like x86 failed to take hold? In this article, we’ll give you a technical overview of what Arm is, where it came from, and why it has become so ubiquitous....

Not to be confused with DLSS, Nvidia’s latest addition to their arsenal of AI-assisted features is called DLDSR, which stands for Deep Learning Dynamic Super Resolution. What’s DLDSR? DLDSR is a method of supersampling aiming to improve over the older DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution). It renders supported games at a higher resolution than your monitor’s native resolution, then shrinks the image to fit within the monitor’s native output. This results in superior image quality with less flickering and better anti-aliasing....

In our intensive Wi-Fi browsing test, the Core i3 Envy 13 lasted just over 7 hours at 50% brightness. This is a good result, surpassing the QHD+ Dell XPS 13 from late 2015 that I recently reviewed. It still falls behind the excellent battery life of the Surface Book and non-touch Dell XPS 13, but this can be attributed to larger batteries in both devices. When playing back a 1080p video, the Envy 13 posted typical battery life of just over 8 hours....

One of my favorite parts of the Envy 13 is the design. HP has crafted a beautiful, sleek laptop using mostly aluminium, delivering a look that fits in with other high-end ultrabooks. Best of all, the Envy 13 is very slim and reasonably light, making it a fantastic device for someone on the go. The large plastic bezel around the display was a letdown, but it’s easy to overlook this downside when the rest of the laptop is well made....

Generally I experienced better battery life from the One M8 than I did from the M7. With typical usage I would end a day with around 40% of the juice remaining to be used, which is a decent result. This is comparable to what I achieved with the Sony Xperia Z1 and its 11.4 Wh battery, but not as good as the LG G2’s highly efficient usage of its own 11....

It’s certainly not a perfect flagship device. The camera, for example, is a serious letdown. Photos don’t look that great, and the limited focus range of the lens completely restricts you from taking macro shots. For a 13-megapixel Exmor RS sensor, I was expecting a bit more quality in this class of device. But most other aspects of the Mate 7 are fine. The performance isn’t up there with the Snapdragon 805s, especially on the GPU side, however, general OS performance is good, and I didn’t really notice any issues even while playing 3D games on the 1080p display....

Huawei are continuing to use 1080p displays on their flagships, which are fine for everyday use, particularly at the smaller size used for the P10. I can tell a difference in sharpness and clarity moving up to 1440p at this size, though I don’t imagine many people would be able to discern the minor improvement without a side-by-side comparison. One thing I did notice with the P10’s display is a slight ’texturing’ on white or light areas, potentially caused by the wave-like RGB subpixel arrangement....

It’s Halloween and one indie game developer has already received quite a scare. UK developer Jacob Shaw recently wrapped up a successful Kickstarter campaign for The Store is Closed, a survival game in which you are trapped in a massive furniture store – either alone or with friends – and must find a way out. You’ll want to avoid the staff, especially at night when their aggression ramps up, and steer clear of managers at all cost....

CommuteAir was using an Internet-exposed server as a development platform, and a Swiss hacker known as “maia arson crimew” was able to access the system and have a look around. The server turned out to be a trove of confidential data, coming from both the company’s business activities and a secret database about people banned from flying in the US. Data stored on the insecure server contained a lot of company-related information, including private data on almost 1,000 CommuteAir employees....

Our power consumption test takes into consideration the complete platform running the same third-party components (graphics, etc.). The built-in graphics from the Core i5 661 were turned off so we could make a straight comparison against the rest of the systems using a GeForce GTX 285 graphics card. All in all, the entire Core i5 661 configuration used just 88 watts at idle and 142 watts under load. This made the Core i5 661 ~20% more efficient than the Core i5 750 when under load, and 35% more efficient than the Phenom II X4 945....

Instead of breaking new ground in performance, Ivy Bridge improves efficiency, marking the arrival of Intel’s 22nm design process which uses new 3D transistors. This allows the flagship quad-core 3.5GHz Core i7-3770K to consume less power than the more modest Sandy Bridge i5-2500K. Granted, the 19-watt power savings we recorded in our tests probably won’t excite desktop users, but it does present a tangible benefit for battery-bound mobile machines. Ivy Bridge’s improved fuel efficiency should grant laptops a little more mileage away from wall chargers....

With both CPUs now clocked at 4GHz the Core i7-5775C and Core i7-4790K delivered virtually the same memory bandwidth. Interestingly we see a slight performance advantage in favour of the Core i7-5775C when measuring L2 cache performance. Clock-for-clock the Core i7-5775C scored higher in Cinebench, out doing the i7-4790K by a 4% margin. The PCMark 7 score was virtually the same on both processors, certainly well within the margin of error....

The Core i7-5960X is surprisingly efficient given its number of cores. At idle it’s no different to an AMD APU and used slightly less power than the 4960X. Under load the 5960X consumed just 4% more power than the 4790K and 4% less than the 4960X. When it comes to overclocking we know that the original Haswell processors ran hot and results varied wildly from CPU to CPU. The LGA1150 Haswell parts ran hot when overclocked because voltages needed to be increased to at least 1....

The Core i7-6700K offered no performance gains in Excel 2013 when compare to the 4790K as we find it to be slightly slower. Again it is disappointing to find no performance gains here as well. The Core i7-6700K was actually 8% slower than the 4790K in 7-Zip and coincidently this is the same maximum Turbo clock deficit. Therefore it seems likely that clock-for-clock both the 6700K and 4790K deliver the exact same performance in this application....

The i7-6700K was actually slightly slower than the 4790K when comparing multi-threaded scores in Cinebench R15. That said, it did manage to just outscore the 4790K when comparing the single-thread score. Disappointingly, the i7-6700K was 1% slower than the 4790K in PCMark 7 and this makes us wonder how it could be up to 10% faster in the following tests. Again we see that the Core i7-6700K is actually slower than the 4790K, this time when testing with 3D Particle Movement....

Starting with the stock out of the box performance we saw that the MSI Z390 Godlike allowed the 9900K to produce a score of 2048 pts. Now slotting that CPU onto the Z370 PC Pro resulted in a score of just 1790 pts after a 6-run average. Initially the score was up around 1900 pts but on the second pass we saw a lot more VRM throttling and this continued as we ran the test 4 more times to report a 6 run average....

The short version of this is that motherboard makers are currently getting blamed for running the 9900K out of spec, when in reality we strongly believe it’s Intel who’s cheating their own spec and pushing board partners to run the 9900K at the default clock multiplier table, rather than at the official power spec. Whatever the case, out of the box the 9900K isn’t running at the Intel spec, it’s essentially overclocked and this has caused power and thermal results to go through the roof....

Rumors have been circulating for a while that Intel plans to release mobile CPUs featuring 16 cores, and today’s leak confirms that. Videocardz has just published a slide containing the full specifications of the chipmaker’s Alder Lake-HX lineup. These chips will be desktop CPU dies installed on a BGA package, which will reportedly have the same length and width as desktop LGA (45x37.5mm), albeit with a reduced height from 4....

As it stands, the Intel Z97 is the latest and greatest chipset available for the LGA1150 platform and the most desirable for overclocking. However, budget Z97 motherboards start at $100 and aren’t focused on overclocking as there hasn’t been a budget CPU to pair with them until now. Quality Z97 motherboards cost upwards of $130, so Asrock developed the Z97 Anniversary, a $100 motherboard designed to extract the maximum amount of performance from the Pentium G3258 processor....
