The PMW3366 sensor wound up to the maximum 12,000-DPI setting is more mouse than I can handle on a 4K display, but it has to be said it still tracked well with no noticeable jitter on a range of surfaces. Turning the DPI down to what I consider a more usable setting, around the 3000 range, the G900 did great in every game tested. I also tested with the DPI turned down very low for image editing and the G900 was buttery smooth here as well....

Surprisingly MaxxMem² reports very little difference in memory bandwidth between the Core i7 920 and the new Core i7 860 processor. Despite utilizing a triple-channel memory controller, the Core i7 920 produced the same write performance, while the read throughput was 5% higher. The Core i7 920 has a 140MHz clock speed disadvantage nonetheless. The Core i5 750 processor, which does operate at the same frequency as the Core i7 920, only uses a dual-channel memory controller and does without Hyper-Threading....

Researchers at French mobile security company Pradeo revealed that the app, Craftsart Cartoon Photo Tools, contained a version of an Android trojan malware called Facestealer. As with similar malicious applications, Craftsart Cartoon Photo Tools did perform some of its promised functions. It converted photos into cartoon- or painting-style images—there are numerous apps available that do the same thing—though some reviews say it merely added a filter to images. However, it included a small piece of code that could steal users’ Facebook login credentials, thereby gaining access to their accounts and any other services that may reuse the same login/passwords....

The dreaded day is here. Starting today (November 21), extensions created with the much debated Manifest V3 technology will be accepted on Firefox’s official add-on store (AMO) for signing. Mozilla is surrendering to the overwhelming power – and market share – of Google Chrome, even though the company has decided to implement its own, more permissive version of MV3. As Mozilla explains, Manifest V3 is an umbrella term for a number of foundational changes to the WebExtensions API in Firefox....

Meta’s share price is currently $146.29 following five straight days of declines. CNBC notes that it’s only 28 cents higher than the closing price on March 16, 2020, the lowest price it hit during the pandemic stock crash. Arguably Meta/Facebook’s biggest crisis in its history (there have been a lot of them) was the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the resulting fallout—the social media firm last month settled one of the lawsuits brought against it over the incident....

Meta/Facebook’s controversy-filled history shows it has never been one to shy away from a hot-button topic, but while the likes of Ubisoft, Square Enix, Konami, and voiceover artist Troy Baker have all loudly declared their love for NFTs—and received plenty of backlash for it—Meta has remained relatively low-key beyond a few comments about exploring the area. But the Financial Times reports that teams at Facebook and Instagram are now preparing a feature that will allow users to display NFTs as profile pictures....

In an interview with CNBC, Microsoft president Brad Smith talked about plans for a new “universal app store.” He also explained its commitment to app fairness and said Microsoft wants to keep Activision Blizzard properties multiplatform. Shortly after Microsoft bought out Activision Blizzard, it said it would honor existing release contracts for games already in development on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Smith’s blog post this week reiterated that promise as part of an attempt to put off government regulators’ fears....

Patch Tuesday is an informal term used by Microsoft since October 2003, but nowadays it is widely accepted as the right time of the month to release new security updates. Being one of the biggest software platforms around, Windows plays a major role in October’s Patch Tuesday scheduled updates. The October 2022 Security Updates released by Microsoft include fixes for 84 security flaws found in different components of Windows (from the Kernel to the CD-ROM Driver), Microsoft Edge, Azure, Active Directory Domain Services, Visual Studio Code, the NTFS file system, TCP/IP, the Win32K API and many other products or features....

Microsoft is reportedly prepping a campaign to inform Windows 8.1 users about the operating system’s pending end-of-life status. Redmond started winding down support for Windows 8.1 on January 9, 2018, when the OS saw mainstream support come to an end. On January 10, 2023, the extended support period will conclude, at which time technical assistance, updates and security patches will no longer be supplied. According to StatCounter, Windows 8.1 is installed on just 3....

The Mortal Kombat movie reboot premiered in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021 in the midst of the pandemic. It follows MMA fighter Cole Young as he joins others from Earth to battle Outworld forces for control of the universe. The film generated $83.5 million worldwide and cost $55 million to produce, and received an audience score of 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics were less enthused, giving it a score of 54 percent....

The MSM8226 also differs from the MSM8930 on the CPU core configuration. Instead of the two Krait 200 cores clocked at 1.2 GHz, the MSM8226 uses four ARM Cortex-A7 cores at 1.2 GHz. The Cortex-A7s used here aren’t quite as powerful as ARM’s top-end designs - you might recall A7s are the low-power cores used in the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa big.LITTLE model - and that’s why we’re seeing four of them in this SoC, replacing two Krait 200s....

Although the Samsung SM951 SSD inside the MSI Cubi 2 managed to break the 1000MB/s barrier for sequential read and write performance, it’s still a good bit slower than what we have seen in the past from systems using higher tier chipsets, as you are about to see. While the SM951 is up to 45% faster on the Z170 platform, it’s still plenty fast in the Cubi 2 Plus and users certainly won’t notice the difference between a sequential write speed of 1....

However it is still important to benchmark the GS65 specifically to see if there are any performance anomalies or other interesting talking points relative to original results we got for this CPU and GPU. And there’s one that sticks out immediately: the fact this system has single channel memory compared to the dual-channel configuration we used in our initial i7-8750H benchmarks. As I showed in my review of the Gigabyte Aero 15X, which also uses single-channel memory, the reduced memory bandwidth provided by this sort of configuration does hurt both productivity and gaming workloads in some instances....

In 3DMark, the GTX 1080 is comfortably CPU-limited in Sky Diver and runs at well above 200 FPS, which is why the GT73VR doesn’t perform any better than a GTX 1070 laptop. In Fire Strike, this laptop is marginally (8 percent) faster, a margin which increases to 21 percent in the demanding Time Spy test. As expected, the GTX 1080 is 32 percent faster than the GTX 1070 when looking purely at the graphics score....

Consumer-grade PCIe 5.0 SSDs are almost here, with speeds of up to a whopping 13 gigabytes per second in sequential reads and 12 gigabytes per second in sequential writes. TeamGroup, Adata, Samsung, Kioxia, and Intel are all preparing solid-state drives that could be key to taking proper advantage of technologies like Microsoft’s DirectStorage. That said, the PCIe 4.0 SSD club still has plenty of blistering fast models from Samsung, Sabrent, Seagate, and Corsair....

Netflix’s subscriber growth has been slowing for some time now after seeing record numbers at the beginning of the pandemic. Today, Netflix reported a net loss of 200,000 subscribers globally during the first quarter, the first decline in paid users since October 2011. It also expects to lose a further 2 million in the second quarter of this year. The price hike back in January is partly to blame, as the company says it’s lost 600,000 subscribers across the US and Canada....
