In gaming scenarios we were surprised to see 4GB will help you extract most out of your system (actual gameplay frame rates versus say, loading levels) but 8GB remains ideal. Those of you focused solely on gaming who don’t have the extra cash to splurge on 16GB of memory, fear not, you aren’t missing out on any hidden performance. For folks who insist that certain game mods will use over 8GB of RAM, that’s fine, go for it, but as far as we’re able to determine there aren’t any popular games that require over 8GB without mods....

Windows God Mode originated with Windows Vista in 2007. It’s since stuck around without changing and can be activated in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The God Mode menu is effortless to create but can be hard to remember as it requires entering a long sequence of characters. Just like Google developed the WebP format for the web, Apple shifted to a superior and more modern file format to store photos on its devices. The HEIC format has other advantages, such as color depth which goes up to 16-bit compared to JPEG’s 8-bit, and a wider dynamic range of brightness. Out of the box, Windows does not support .HEIC files, so you can’t open photos transferred directly from your iPhone or iPad devices....

It won’t be a surprise to many of you that 1440p at 240Hz requires a TN panel. These days we do see some 1080p 240Hz panels using IPS and VA, but as 1080p 240Hz starts getting upgraded to better technology, TN starts to hit 240Hz at higher resolutions. This is somewhat of a comeback for TN at 1440p, given the vast majority of 1440p gaming monitors in the past few years have been released with either IPS or VA panels at up to 165Hz....

So with the One M9, HTC has completely changed tune. The OmniVision OV4688 “Ultrapixel” 1/3" sensor has been relegated to the front selfie camera, and it still packs the very same 4-megapixel resolution, 2.0 micron pixels, and f/2.0 27mm lens. Like with the M8, this camera isn’t optically stabilized, but its large pixel size will help with selfies in all conditions. Not going with a QHD display does mean that you don’t get that superb, higher level of crispness that’s noticeable especially when viewing text. However packing 367 PPI is more than enough pixel density for excellent sharpness in most situations, and you’ll certainly find it hard to spot individual pixels. The RGB stripe subpixel matrix and general strengths of IPS technology also improve clarity, making text a breeze to read....

Instagram parent Meta confirmed to The Verge that it is developing a nudity protection feature for the photo-and-video sharing platform. Researcher Alessandro Paluzzi tweeted a screengrab of the technology, which “covers photos that may contain nudity in chat.” People will still be able to view these images if they choose to. Meta emphasized that technology does not allow the company or third parties to access users’ private messages. “We’re working closely with experts to ensure these new features preserve people’s privacy, while giving them control over the messages they receive,” said Meta spokesperson Liz Fernandez....

Twitter user @BenchLeaks, shared a new Geekbench 5 listing featuring an upcoming Intel processor called the N95. We believe this chip will be targeting entry-level devices such Chromebooks, lower-cost laptops and tablets, using the Alder Lake-N CPU architecture featuring Gracemont CPU cores. The N95’s Geekbench performance reflects this, with benchmark scores equivalent to Intel’s 6th generation Skylake mobile CPUs from several years ago. Alder Lake-N is a future Intel CPU architecture designed specifically for budget-friendly systems....

Despite all this the Core i7 980 is a very different animal. For one, it is based on the 32nm die shrink of Nehalem known as Gulftown – which itself is part of the Westmare family that also includes Clarkdale and Arrandale. Therefore whereas all current 45nm Bloomfield Core i7 processors feature 4 cores with 8 threads (Hyper-Threading), the Core i7 980 can pack 6 cores into a similar package and feature an incredible 12 threads....

Translation: this is just a 9900K with MCE enabled. Intel has raised the TDP to 127 watts as the base clock has increased to 4 GHz, but you’ll require a good cooler to dissipate well over 200 watts if you hope to achieve maximum performance at reasonable temperatures. Also, because this is a ’limited edition’ processor, the warranty has been slashed from the standard 3 years, to just 12 months....

Our custom WinRAR compression test highlighted the importance of memory bandwidth here. While the DH61AG may have slipped behind the Z68M-ITX/HT, Intel’s low-profile platform managed to outpace the six-core Phenom II X6 1100T. Again we see the effects of using 1333MHz memory opposed to 1600MHz as the Intel DH61AG was 15% slower than Asrock’s board when benchmarking with Photoshop CS5.

Corsair Graphite Series 760T When it comes to computer cases, there is almost an endless list of viable candidates with no real right or wrong choice. That said, price and performance still play a part. When overclocking you want a case that will quietly and efficiently remove heat. The Corsair Graphite Series 760T certainly isn’t the cheapest option you’ll happen upon but it is one of the coolest. Priced at a budget-busting $190, we wouldn’t blame you for choosing a case that makes more sense for this build, such as the Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-01 or Silverstone Redline RL01 at $50 each (we’ll toss the hardware in the Redline RL01 too since we just got one in-house)....

When compared to the Crucial m4 512GB the Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB was 2% faster and 22% faster than the SSD 510 Series 120GB drive. The only drive to beat the Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB was the Samsung 830 Series 512GB which was 18% faster. The program copy test is comprised of many small non-compressed files (6104 files totaling 2.75GB). The Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB performs much like other SF-2281 based SSDs that we have tested....

Intel said MediaTek aims to use Intel Foundry Services (IFS) to create chips for a range of smart edge devices that are optimized for high performance, low power and always-on connectivity. Team Blue has significant capacity in the US and Europe, and should be able to help MediaTek expand its reach into these major markets. Financial terms of the agreement were not shared publicly and we don’t know how many chips Intel will be making for MediaTek....

Consumers in the US and mainland China were probably pleased to see Apple announce the iPhone 14 at the same price as last year’s iPhone 13 for all variants. Unfortunately, the new model costs significantly more in the UK, Australia, Japan, and Germany. The price increases over the iPhone 13 are somewhat modest in the UK and Australia. The standard iPhone 14 will launch at £849 in the UK — £70 ($80) over its predecessor....

We’ve heard countless different takes on the matter and with this feature we want to hone in on the genuine concern that using anything less than a liquid cooler on the Ryzen 5 7600X would see a significant performance loss. After all, in our review of the 7600X we tested with the be quiet! Pure Loop 2 FX 360mm liquid cooler and the chip still peaked at 93C for an all-core workload....

NASA at the end of April announced it had completed the final stage of alignment on the James Webb Space Telescope, and that the observatory was ready for instrument commissioning before the team starts releasing its first science data in July. In its most recent update, NASA said the Webb team has approved 12 out of 17 science instrument modes including the Mid-Infrared Instrument, the NIRCam wide field slitless spectroscopy and the single object slitless spectroscopy....

Kingston claims the same 555MB/s read and 510MB/s write performance for the 120GB and 240GB HyperX, whereas OCZ lists slightly different performance for each of its models. The Vertex 3 120GB touts read and write speeds of 550MB/s and 500MB/s, the larger 240GB version is slightly faster with 550MB/s reads 520MB/s writes. The largest model offers 480GB of storage and is actually the slowest, rated at 530MB/s reads and 450MB/s writes....
