A few days ago, Reddit user Leopeva64-2 discovered an experimental feature in Microsoft Edge Canary that makes scrolling look smoother by increasing the screen’s refresh rate only when scrolling. It essentially brings VRR functionality into the browser. Of course, it requires a display with either VRR, AMD FreeSync, or Nvidia G-Sync support. Edge Canary is an insider version of Microsoft’s browser that allows users to see the latest features developers are working on before they’re stable enough for the dev, beta, or public releases....

As a quick recap, last time we tested the GTX 1070 Gaming Box attached to a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon over Thunderbolt 3. The Gaming Box does contain a fully-fledged desktop GTX 1070 GPU, but the weak Core i5-7200U with just two cores and four threads presented a bottleneck in essentially all games we tested. The eGPU did transform the ThinkPad from a sleek ultraportable into a genuine gaming machine with decent enough performance, but the full power of the GeForce GTX 1070 wasn’t unleashed by any stretch....

A report from Restore Privacy suggests AMD may have been the target of a cyberattack. According to the publication, the RansomHouse group claims it has managed to come into possession of sensitive information stolen from the chipmaker. RansomHouse is a relative newcomer to the ransomware market that is believed to have emerged in December 2021. In the meantime, it has targeted organizations like the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority and Shoprite, which is the largest supermarket chain in Africa....

The top 10 processors that we tested were all Intel with the fastest AMD processor, the FX-9590, being beaten by a Haswell Core i3 and dominated by a Skylake Core i3. Worse still, the FX-8350 was almost 30% slower than the Core i5-2500K and a little over 30% slower than the Core i5-4690K. Fallout 4 requires at least four threads, dual-core processors such as the Pentium G3258 and Celeron G1820 really struggled....

Fortunately, the gaming community has taken matters into its own hands. Mortal Kombat+ is a project that involves taking the first three games in the series – Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – and disassembling their code to fix known issues that Midway never bothered to correct. Each game has its own set of issues but all are receiving improved factory user settings, better CPU AI, updated audio and new characters....

As part of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) project, the commission also created the Rural Broadband Accountability Plan to ensure that programs such as the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund are compliant with the regulatory terms. The new plan aims to double the number of audits and verifications in 2022 compared to 2021 and do more on-site audits and verifications on randomly selected locations. The plan will also increase the audits and verifications of large and higher-risk support recipients, increase program transparency, and publish the results of verifications, audits, and speed/latency performance tests on Universal Service Administration Company’s website....

Sub-$150 phones have gradually gotten to the stage where everyday performance is quite good, first thanks to Microsoft’s optimization of Windows Phone on low-end hardware, and then with Google’s various efforts on the Android side. With the latest Moto E I was very impressed with how capable the handset is from a performance perspective, even if it’ll just set you back $100. The device loads applications quickly and navigating through the operating system is quite smooth....

Apple has reportedly been toying with the idea of a foldable iPhone for some time. However, the Cupertino giant isn’t known for rushing to bring a new product category to market before everyone else. Still, industry watchers expect the foldable smartphone market to reach 27.6 million units in 2025, representing a healthy growth compared to last year’s 7.1 million units. According to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DS, Apple may have delayed its first foldable iPhone until 2025....

The Ford Mustang is known to be one of the most tuner-friendly cars around. However, the upcoming S650 seventh-gen model could change that reputation, and not in a good way. Speaking to Ford Authority, Mustang’s Chief Engineer Ed Krenz noted that the latest model utilized the company’s new Fully Networked Vehicle (FNV) electrical architecture, making for some good and bad news. The good news being the convenience of getting over-the-air updates and added cybersecurity against hackers, with cars being practically connected computers on wheels these days....

Our overclock resulted in another 3fps in Just Cause 2. While an average of 81fps at 2560x1600 might be impressive, we hoped to push this card a lot harder. A similar 4fps gain was achieved when testing Battlefield 3 at 1920x1200, while our custom overclock gave the Phantom a 5fps boost in The Witcher 2, besting the GTX 590.

Our overclock allowed the Phantom to render 78.9fps in Tomb Raider, 3% more frames than the factory overclock and 13% more than the standard card. Again, our overclock allowed for 3% more performance than Gainward’s stock overclock and 11% more than the reference GTX 760. We saw similar figures when testing BioShock Infinite: our custom overclock was 3% faster than Gainward’s factory overclock and 13% quicker than a normal GTX 760....

As you might expect, the dual-core processors struggled with the minimum frame rates dipping to and below 30fps. Even AMD’s Athlon X4 860K struggled and while it was better than the slower clocked Intel dual-core processors, the minimum wasn’t great when using the Titan X. AMD’s FX-series also suffered from rather low minimum frame rates. Granted the FX-9590 didn’t dip below 70fps, it was still much slower than the Core i7 processors....

Overclocking the R9 Fury X Crossfire cards didn’t help at all when testing Watch Dogs, but even so they were still 15% faster than the GTX 980 Ti SLI cards. That said, once we overclocked the GTX 980 Ti it was a different story and this gave Nvidia a 3% performance advantage. This time when looking at the 99th percentile performance with Watch Dogs we see that the GTX 980 Ti SLI cards do provide strong gains over a single card....

When we reviewed the Radeon RX 6700 XT on day one, we found it to be about 4% slower than the RTX 3070 in a 14-game sample. We collected that data using our older Ryzen 9 3950X test system. But now we have an even more robust set of 45 games running on top of a Ryzen 9 5950X along with the latest display drivers which have brought some nice gains for the RTX 3070 in titles such as Godfall, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Dirt 5....

Gigabyte with their new Aero 15 is one such example. It packs a Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor and a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GPU, which we know is well suited to 1080p gaming. There’s also up to 16GB of RAM and two M.2 SSD slots, kitted out with a 512GB SSD in my review unit. Impressively, Gigabyte has included a 94 Wh battery so the Aero can be easily used on the go....

Litigators have filed a class-action lawsuit against the AI system behind GitHub Copilot, a feature designed by Microsoft and OpenAI to help programmers write better code faster. According to the lawyers, Copilot is trampling on the rights of “possibly millions” of GitHub subscribers, (ab)using countless lines of codes with no proper permission and against the rules of many open-source licenses. Copilot is a machine learning algorithm developed by OpenAI – the same company behind the image generating system known as DALL-E – to suggest code and even entire functions in real-time, right from the code editor or the user’s preferred IDE....

During its Nintendo Direct presentation on Monday, the Japanese gaming giant confirmed that Pilotwings 64, Mario Party and Mario Party 2 will be added to the collection by the end of the year. In 2023, fans can expect to see Mario Party 3, Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, Excitebike 64 and 1080 Snowboarding join the mix. Nintendo saved the best for last as it was revealed that classic first-person shooter GoldenEye 007 is also in the pipeline....

The first time the Insight APK was spotted was in mid-March, but its purpose wasn’t clear. After decompiling and examining the latest version, users found multiple lines of code referencing “tags,” suggesting this APK would be responsible for adding Bluetooth tracker detection capabilities to Android devices. Insight version 22.12.13 features a couple of lines commented with “Unfamiliar device alerts” and an “Unfamiliar Tag Detected Notification” for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tags....

These non-Nexus large-screened devices don’t include Google’s latest battery-saving features in Android either, which will likely have a minor impact on battery life, especially in standby. The Snapdragon 810 is known to be a power-hungry SoC, though, which makes the large battery in the Nexus 6P important to achieving decent battery life. The Nexus 6P doesn’t feature amazing battery life, finishing up in the middle of our graphs. However, it consistently outperforms the smaller and less powerful Nexus 5X, and crushes the similarly-sized Moto X Style, which are two good signs for this larger flagship device....

Chrome 101.0.4951.41 for Windows, Mac, and Linux contains several fixes for severe security flaws. Google paid out a total of $29,000 for four of the top six more critical vulnerabilities. Chrome devs discovered the other two in-house. These bugs include the following. CVE-2022-1477: Use after free in Vulkan. CVE-2022-1478: Use after free in SwiftShader. CVE-2022-1479: Use after free in ANGLE. CVE-2022-1481: Use after free in Sharing. CVE-2022-1482: Inappropriate implementation in WebGL....
