But the phablet market is certainly not limited to those two devices, with plenty of other options available. One such option is the Huawei Ascend Mate 7, a six-inch handset that is full of surprises and certainly worth more attention than it gets. Parts of the Ascend Mate 7 aren’t conventional. The Hisilicon Kirin 925 is an SoC I haven’t encountered before, and departs from the traditional use of Qualcomm or MediaTek....
The biggest gains with the Kirin 970 are seen in graphics. There is a bit of variance between the tests, but what we’re seeing in general is a 35 to 50 percent performance uplift compared to the Kirin 960. It doesn’t manage to match the Snapdragon 835 despite these large gains, still falling 10 to 20 percent behind. It’s a similar story compared to the Exynos 8895: not quite as fast....
Intel revealed an ambitious plan last year to create a new European chip manufacturing arm as part of its IDM 2.0 strategy. At the time, the company said it would invest up to €80 billion ($87.5 billion) over the next several years to build at least two factories in the region, but their exact location remained a mystery. Today, the company announced “Silicon Junction” — the first phase of an aggressive multi-year plan to expand and diversify its manufacturing capabilities....
The Arc “Special Edition” GPU on display at IEM gave attendees a preview of the upcoming Alchemist 700-series lineup. It did not specify if the board was based on their flagship A770 or A780 model intended to compete directly with Nvidia’s 3070 and 3080 lineups. The announcement was made via Twitter by Bryce_GfxDriverGuru, one of Intel’s official Arc Community Advocates. The card is purported to feature 32 Intel Xe cores, 16GB of DDR6 RAM, and five outputs (four DisplayPort and one HDMI)....
This is down to Intel optimizing the efficiency point of this CPU. By reducing clock speeds slightly, Intel gained enough power budget to add in two extra cores, and these two cores more than offset the reduction in clock speed, giving us more performance in multi-threaded workloads. It makes the CPU design more complex and expensive and the gains are only present in workloads that use more than four cores, but there’s no doubt the gains are there....
FurMark shows that all the tested processors are able to max out the GeForce GTX 285 graphics card at 1024x768. The minimum frame rate, which is more dependent on the CPU, shows the Core i5 750 delivering average performance as it was slower than both the Core 2 Quad Q9650 and Phenom II X4 965 by quite a margin. This could be due in part to the Core i5 750 being the slowest clocked processor tested, as the Core i7 920 also suffered from the same lackluster performance....
To be fair, the i7-3960X isn’t all that impressive when gaming either, though it’s at least on par with the 2600K. I believe the SB-E parts struggle here because they have inferior memory performance to the 2500K and 2600K. Despite the newer chips supporting quad-channel RAM, the SB-E processors have a higher memory latency, which attributes for the loss in bandwidth. Interestingly when measuring bandwidth performance using SiSoftware Sandra, as many tech sites do, the SB-E processors appear to have a memory bandwidth in excess of 35GB/s, roughly 75% more than the 2600K....
The package is pretty nice as well. We have become accustomed to motherboard packages including pretty much just the motherboard but here consumers get a high-bandwidth SLI bridge, four SATA cables, RGB LED strip extension cable, velcro ties, thermistor cables, cable labels and a swanky I/O shield. Onboard there’s a Creative Sound Core 3D chip supporting Recon3Di and a headset amplifier. Networking is handled by an Intel Gigabit NIC along with a Killer E2500 controller....
Intel writes that the Core i9-12900KS, which it refers to as the world’s fastest desktop processor, will be available on April 5 with a recommended price of $739. The company will be showing off the chip and talking about its features in a Talking Tech livestream on the same day from 12pm PT / 3pm ET. The event will cover the building of four PCs with industry experts, so it could be pretty interesting....
Corona comes as a standalone benchmark. It renders a fixed scene six times and we measure the time it takes to complete the task. This application loves threads so the more the merrier. As you can see, the Core i9-7900X took just 97 seconds which is less than half the time it takes the Core i7-7700K, it’s also a 34% improvement over the 1800X. The 7820X was roughly on par with the 6950X while the 7800X was slower than the 6900K but did out-edge the Ryzen 5 1600X....
This week, Intel published a brief benchmark of its upcoming Arc A750 graphics card, claiming it compares favorably with Nvidia’s RTX 3060 in a few popular games. Previous Arc benchmarks, both official and unofficial, have been mixed thus far. The primary title Intel tested in its video (above) is Cyberpunk 2077, but it also showed comparisons for Control, F1 2021, Borderlands 3, and Fortnite. All the comparisons show the A750 performing about 15 percent better than the 3060....
The Core i7-3960X roughly matched the performance of the Sandy Bridge processors when testing with Just Cause 2, though this test is primarily GPU bound as is the case with most games when tested at standard (playing) resolutions. Nothing too different when testing with The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The new Core i7 EE was a fraction slower than the original Sandy Bridge CPUs. Interestingly the Core i7-3960X was able to pull through when testing with Crysis 2, though the margins were minimal....
The single threaded performance of the Core i7-6770HQ is actually quite good thanks to that high boost clock speed. When it comes to multi-threaded performance, the 8-threaded processor easily tops anything previously tested. Here we see that the Intel HD Graphics 530 graphics of the Core i7-6770HQ has no trouble dispatching of previously tested Intel and AMD iGPU solutions in 3DMark. The 11171pt score meant it was 59% faster than the Asrock DeskMini in this test....
When using Atto Disk Benchmark to measure the SSD 510’s performance we found it to be on a similar plane as the SSD 320 as well as the RealSSD C300. However, it was trounced by the Vertex 3.
For the application load test, we launch the following applications on Windows’ startup: Internet Explorer, Outlook 2007, Access 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, Publisher 2007, Word 2007 and Photoshop CS4. The test starts when the Windows 7 startup sound plays to the time the final application is loaded. Intel’s SSD 510 performed reasonably well, taking just 5.1 seconds to load all the applications. There’s nothing to celebrate either, as we generally witness very little variance in performance between SSDs....
The Columbus site, part of Intel’s IDM 2.0 strategy, will initially consist of two chip factories on the 1,000-acre plot and directly employ 3,000 people. The New York Times writes that it will also create additional jobs in construction and nearby businesses. Intel said construction on the site would begin this year, and the plant should be operational by 2025. The company has the option to expand to 2,000 acres and up to eight fabs....
Intel will hold a launch event for its next-generation Xeon data center CPUs on January 10. Around the same time as Intel’s confirmation this week, a Linux kernel update has shed some light on a planned system for à la carte processor hardware features. Since Intel first announced Sapphire Rapids in 2019, leaks and software updates have revealed much about the upcoming CPU line. It will run on 56 cores and 112 threads with a maximum TDP of 360 watts....
Intel is often criticized for introducing too many new chipsets and sockets, but this isn’t usually the case with “ticks” as the microarchitecture is largely the same as the preceding “tock.” Such is the case with Ivy Bridge, which uses the same LGA1155 socket introduced in early last year alongside Sandy Bridge. Folks who already own Cougar Point (6-series chipset) motherboards will be able to upgrade to Ivy Bridge without purchasing a completely new platform....
