We’ve seen countless of older laptops with non-removable batteries that now throttle (slow down) when on battery, because the battery no longer holds a decent charge, although that’s a bit more involved and will require you to disassemble the entire unit. But before you look into that, one noob-friendly option to speed up your system is to upgrade your RAM. This tutorial will focus on how to upgrade the amount of RAM in your laptop, and the best part is, the process is not as technical as the average person may think it is....

From an aesthetic point of view the G3 is instantly impressive – it’s hewn from magnesium and aluminum alloy and it’s covered in classy touches. And on the inside, HP’s latest deploys a 3:2 display, a new Intel Core i7 processor and plenty of security features. There’s a renewed focus on home and hybrid working with this notebook, too, which is no surprise. In practical terms that means buyers get a top-notch 5MP webcam with noise cancellation and face tracking to impress on video calls....

The Omen 45L is the latest in HP’s well-reviewed Omen desktop line. In addition to being larger than the previous Omen 40L, the new PC comes with a patented Omen Cryo Chamber. It’s a chamber placed outside of the main interior section that can house all-in-one liquid coolers measuring up to 360mm in length. The theory behind the Cryo Chamber is that by keeping the radiator on the outside of the case, it can suck in cooler ambient air than if it were on the inside....

The glossy finish to the display and its protective Gorilla Glass makes colors pop more than a matte finish, although it does mean the Spectre’s display is a fingerprint magnet. Viewing angles are superb thanks to IPS technology and the glossy finish, too. The Spectre’s display delivers mostly excellent performance across the board. The display’s brightness is good, at around 330 nits at peak, with a fantastic contrast ratio of around 1500:1 thanks to deep blacks....

The HP TouchPad features an all-new version of webOS specifically designed for tablets. WebOS 3.0 features a lot of the same concepts and ideas as its smartphone-based forebears, but there are some key differences. Most notable is the absence of the gesture area that was found below the display on webOS smartphones. This gesture area was used to navigate applications and web pages in lieu of back buttons and the like....

Unfortunately the U Ultra is still running the January security updates at the time of writing (April), and I don’t hold high hopes for HTC upgrading this phone too often. HTC’s record is pretty average in this regard, so if you want fast updates and the latest security patches, stick to a Google Pixel or a handset where the manufacturer has openly promised to release patches on a monthly basis....

Most of the benchmarks above reveal fantastic battery life for the Mate 10, though not necessarily higher than the Mate 9 and not hugely ahead of other top contenders. The great news here is that even though the Mate 10 isn’t always the top performer, it still delivers great battery life, especially in key tests like web browsing. Oddly, the Mate 10 isn’t as strong in PCMark tests, though it does well in Basemark Web 3....

3dfx Voodoo Graphics 3dfx’s Voodoo Graphics is the epitome of iconic PC GPUs. Turning its back on 2D applications, 3dfx concentrated on 3D workloads, creating separate framebuffer (PixelFX) and texture mapping (TexelFX) chips with their own 64-bit memory interfaces and access to independent memory (usually 2MB each), bringing an effective 128-bit I/O and enabling the Voodoo to pump out impressive fillrates. The two-chip approach also allowed relatively easy scaling for more complex and capable cards....

Despite taking advantage of faster 1600MHz memory, the Pentium N3700 is still quite a bit slower than the Pentium J2900. Here we see a 9% reduction in memory bandwidth despite using 20% higher clocked memory. The drop in bandwidth is due to the fact that the N3700 is clocked between 10 and 33% slower than the J2900. Interestingly, although the Celeron N3050 is also clocked much lower than the Celeron J1800, it delivered the same 6....

According to new rumors, Intel’s 14th-gen desktop processors, codenamed Meteor Lake, will require a new LGA 2551 socket, meaning that current LGA 1700 motherboards would support only two CPU generations – as has been the case for quite some time – the current Alder Lake CPUs will be followed by Raptor Lake in late 2022. LGA 2551 will reportedly measure 38 x 46 mm, making it 0.5 mm wider and 1 mm longer than LGA 1700....

Gelsinger’s LinkedIn video lists 11 Intel highlights across last year while also looking to the future. Eleven is both the number of years he was away from the company (Gelsinger left in September 2009 to become EMC’s CEO/president) and the number of months he’s been back. A lot of Gelsinger’s top 11 consists of the general fluff one expects from CEOs. He describes his personal superpower as the “passion and optimism” he has that “technology truly can change and improve the life of every person on the planet,” which is unlikely to get him into the X-Men....

The Core i7-4790 didn’t fare that well in Crysis 3 being 5% slower than the i5-4690 at 1080p. Moreover, it was slower than the i3-4350 despite being just 3% faster than the i3-4160. Swapping out the GTX 980 for the GTX 960 capped all processors at around 44fps. Our single player Battlefield 4 test saw the Core i7-4790 trail the i5-4690 by a 4% margin while matching the Core i3-4160....

The Core i7-4790K was 7% faster than the 4770K in our Excel 2013 test taking just 3.62 seconds, which equated to a 0.24 second improvement. WinRAR showed a 15% performance advantage going to the Core i7-4790K when compared to the 4770K when measuring multi-threading performance. It took just 16.7 seconds for the Core i7-4790K to complete the Photoshop CS6 workload, a 14% improvement over the 4770K.

The media and entertainment benchmark includes testing with the following applications; Blender, HandBrake, LuxRender, IOMeter and Maya. This comprehensive test gave the Core i7-6700K a score of just 5.25pts which was just 1.5% less than the 4790K. The product development suite includes; Rodinia (pre-euler 3D), WPCcfd (based on OpenFoam), CalculiX, IOMeter (product dev trace), Catia viewset, Siemens NX viewset, SolidWorks viewset and Autodesk Showcase viewset. This time the Core i7-6700K was a fraction faster than the 4790K, though it’s safe to say both processors delivered the same performance here....

Here we see a 7% increase in score for the 7700K and 7600K over their Skylake parts. This time the 7700K was up to 12% faster than the 6700K while the 7600K was 8% faster than the 6600K.

However the extent to which you’ll get a performance uplift depends on the game and the settings you use. On the vast majority of gaming laptops you’ll be GPU bottlenecked in modern titles even at modest quality levels at 1080p. With a 1070 Max-Q inside our test system, performance gains in the 5 to 15 percent range are most common, even in titles that already averaged 80 to 100 FPS on a 7700HQ system....

Overclockers Jon Sandström, Pieter Plaiser, and their team set the record at an Asus office in Taiwan earlier this month. Using an open-bench system with an Asus ROG Maximus Z790 Apex motherboard, the Core i9-13900K, which has a maximum boost of 5.8GHz, was pushed to 9.009GHz. It was able to run Pifast for 6.85 seconds and SuperPi 32M for 3 minutes, 3 seconds, and 778 milliseconds. The team achieved its world record, which now tops the HWBOT charts, by disabling all of the Core i9-13900K’s Efficient cores and hyperthreading, leaving only the eight Performance cores and eight threads....

As we suspected, the extra 4 EUs of the Intel HD 4600 Graphics don’t make it much faster than what we already had with the HD 4000 Graphics. The 25% increase in EUs and the slight bump in operating frequency allowed for 27% more performance in Medal of Honor Warfighter at 1440x900. However even at this modest resolution using medium quality settings the HD 4600 Graphics only spat out 21....

November rumors stated Intel wasn’t planning to release any Meteor Lake CPUs in 2023. Instead, the company would fill the 2023 product slot with a refresh of its latest Raptor Lake line with modest performance improvements. Meteor Lake would debut as a series of laptop CPUs in 2024 along with the 15th-generation Arrow Lake desktop processors, with a Meteor Lake desktop series to possibly follow. However, trusted leaker @OneRaichu said this week that there may never be Meteor Lake desktop processors....
