It was quickly spotted that the memory was running much slower than it ought to be, though we weren’t entirely sure this was the cause of the massive deficit. Turns out it was, as moving the memory back up to 2400MHz resulted in a massive 67% increase in minimum frame rate for the Core i7-4770K. A similar situation was found with the Core i3-4360, which went from a minimum of 41fps with DDR3-1333 memory to a minimum of 65fps with DDR3-2400....

The video playback test in PCMark 7 uses Microsoft Media Foundation for playback and runs 1080p samples at 24fps. As you can see all processors managed to deliver the required 24fps. Not wanting to just take PCMark’s word for it we conducted our own 720p and 1080p tests using MPlayer. Using the benchmark mode, MPlayer allows the system to play the video as fast as it can without frame loss....

One evidence of the rapid increase in SIM-swapping attacks is the number of related complaints received by the FBI last year. Between January 2018 and December 2020, a total of 320 such complaints were filed that led to losses of $12 million. However, in just 2021 alone, that figure rose sharply to $68 million following 1,611 SIM swapping complaints. Although SMS-based 2FA adds an extra layer of security to an account, the approach has long been considered risky as mobile carriers can still be tricked by attackers into switching a user’s phone number to a SIM card of their choice, either through malware or impersonation....

After a lighter release in December 2022, Patch Tuesday for January 2023 is going back to fixing a huge amount of security flaws in Microsoft software. The new updates are the last ones designed to support Windows 7 and Windows 8 next to Windows 10 and Windows 11, and they provide fixes for 98 total vulnerabilities – including a potentially dangerous zero-day flaw. Five additional games have been added to AMD’s FSR 2.0 temporal upscaling lineup, bringing the total count to 19. The five games that have joined the upcoming FSR 2.0 titles are Abyss World, Hitman 3, Rescue Party: Live!, Super People, and The Callisto Protocol. As Hitman 3 got released over a year ago, it will receive FSR 2.0 support through an update, while other games will have the tech at launch....

Earlier this month, Microsoft released its much-awaited DirectStorage API to PC game developers. The Redmond giant says the technology — which was first implemented for the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S consoles — will soon bring the same benefits to PCs equipped with fast solid-state storage. Specifically, DirectStorage will take advantage of the great internal parallelism of modern storage devices to enable lightning-fast loading times, seamless in-game transitions, more expansive and detailed worlds, and even features like Quick Resume....

Nope. Chips and Cheese has come clean. They fooled Geekbench with a phony name by spoofing the CPUID on what was actually a Ryzen 9 7950X system. They also disabled six cores and reduced the precision boost overdrive clock by 350 MHz to make it look (and perform!) like a middle ground between the very real 7700X and 7900X. I wonder what AMD’s engineers thought when they saw the ’leaked’ processor....

The R9 Fury X Crossfire cards performed well in Total War: Attila with an average of 45fps. This meant that they were 36% faster than the GTX 980 Ti SLI cards and 105% faster than a single Fury X. The R9 Fury X Crossfire cards remained strong in the 99th percentile testing at 59% faster than the GTX 980 Ti SLI cards. Interestingly, the 99.9th percentile performance was considerably slower however....

The additional CPU power in the X5 v7 doesn’t always lead to a better average frame rate at 1080p, but it does produce noticeably better minimum frame rates at this resolution, which creates a smoother experience. The difference at times is significant, enough that in some games it makes ultra settings playable where previously they weren’t with the same GPU. The X5 v7 is only available with high-resolution G-Sync displays, either 1620p or 4K depending on the model....

Launched in November 2020 alongside the more powerful Xbox Series X, the Series S features a custom AMD octa-core CPU clocked at 3.6 GHz alongside 10 GB of GDDR5 memory and a custom RDNA 2 GPU with 20 compute units. The entry-level Series S is clocked slower than the Xbox Series X, has less memory and a far less powerful GPU. What’s more, it has just half the storage space of its bigger brother - 512 GB of flash storage versus 1TB - and lacks an optical disc drive....

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti rendered 39.2fps without the overclock, but the 14% gain meant that the GTX 560 Ti was now faster than a standard Radeon HD 6970. The GeForce GTX 560 Ti went from 28.9fps to 32.6fps in Crysis 2 which worked out to be an additional 4fps on average. The GeForce GTX 560 Ti was already sitting pretty with an average of 60.5fps, but the additional 10fps were not knocked back as the overclock yielded a 16% performance increase....

As the title suggests the emphasis is on gaming. For general computing, it will really depend on the applications and even then, what you’re doing with said application. Premiere Pro using 4K footage eats a lot of RAM, and this is where having 64GB or more will get you tangible benefits. So it’s best to research the requirements for the particular applications and workloads you intend on using. When it comes to game testing, properly measuring the impact of RAM capacity is no easy task as there are many factors at play....

When Microsoft unveiled Windows 11, many people understandably drew the conclusion that it was merely a reskin of Windows 10… with serious restrictions as to what systems could be upgraded to it. That’s only partly true, as Windows 11 does feature some quality of life improvements as well as many changes under the hood that make it faster and better in certain situations. And by the way, at least for now, you can install Windows 11 on PCs that don’t meet one or more of the officially required criteria, as we’ve explained in a separate brief guide....
