As you are probably aware, the original Core i7 processors feature a on-die memory controller, a first for Intel. This meant that the expensive Intel X58 chipset didn’t do much compared to previous generation chipsets. With the ICH10 south bridge chip taking care of all the I/O stuff (USB, SATA, Ethernet, etc.) the X58 north bridge chip managed the PCI Express hub and that was almost about it. Despite of this, the X58 remains to this day Intel’s most expensive desktop chipset, costing more than the P45 and X48, which are considerably more complex....

The Intel UHD Graphics 630 have been disabled and therefore the 9400F has no form of integrated graphics – just like the Ryzen 5 2600X. This is meant to make the 9400F cheaper than the Core i5-8400, even though Intel’s list pricing doesn’t make this apparent, in practice the Core i5-9400F can be had for $175 while the i5-8400 is still $215, making the newer chip about 20% cheaper. It also means it’s cheaper than the Ryzen 5 2600X which is currently retailing for $190....

Starting with the motherboards, as usual MSI’s been on their game by quickly sending over the MAG B660M Mortar WiFi DDR4 and as it stands this is the only B660 board we have for testing, so we’re happy to have it. The rest of Intel’s partners seem to have gotten into the holiday spirit, forgetting that this launch is happening. But no matter, the B660M Mortar WiFi DDR4 is a great starting point and is ideal for showing off the new Core i7-12700....

As expected, the first Intel Arc GPUs are destined for laptops, which is a little different to what AMD and Nvidia usually do, which is to launch desktop products first. However, Arc desktop cards are still coming. Intel is saying Q2 2022 for these products and some of what we’re looking at today applies to those cards, such as the GPU die details. Intel is doing some sort of small teaser for desktop add-in cards today, which we’ll be covering in our regular coverage....

For some context, the Limited Edition cards are just Intel’s version of Nvidia’s Founder’s Edition cards – they’re neither special nor limited. Shrout emphasized that they’d be available from day one and in large quantities. So the question is: will you want one? For Intel’s first foray into making a graphics card, it sounds like they’ve done a decent job. Shrout and Petersen focus mainly on the A750 Limited Edition in this video, but from the looks of it, the A770 Limited Edition uses a similar PCB and cooler....

In fact, even most Core i5 and i7 processors have locked clock multipliers, forcing users to spend big to overclock. The last time we saw overclockable budget CPUs from Intel was during its Core 2 days when you could pick up a Core 2 Duo E7200 for a whisker over $100 and easily push it to 3.8GHz, a 50% boost that let the chip crush the then $850 Core 2 Quad Q6600 and $266 Core 2 Duo E8600....

Above you can see all the kit ready to go inside the Graphite Series 760T. The case can handle considerably more storage but as a starting point, we will stick with the Corsair Force LS 120GB SSD and WD Black 4TB HDD. Our budget build doesn’t exactly fill the Corsair Graphite Series 760T. You could fit a pair of those Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750 Ti Black graphics cards back to back....

Using the MobileMark 2007 Workload Intel claims that when active the drives consume just 850mW of power and 600mW when at idle. They claim the same load and idle power consumption for all five models. The 60GB model packs read and write speeds of 550MB/s - 475MB/s, while the larger 120GB version is slightly faster with 550MB/s reads 500MB/s writes. The 180GB, 240GB and 480GB models are slightly faster again as the write performance is boosted to 520MB/s....

With so many drives using the same parts, shopping for an SSD was tough last summer. At the time, the HyperX and Vertex 3 offered virtually identical performance for the same price. Although the market is still dominated by SandForce-based drives, things are getting interesting as, among other changes, OCZ has finally begun utilizing its own Indilinx controllers and SandForce was acquired by LSI in January for $370 million. It’s unclear when SandForce’s next controllers will arrive, but in the meantime, companies seem to be making the most of its second-gen chips....

The Kingston SSDNow V+180 64GB took just 61 seconds to complete our 6GB file copy test with a throughput of 97.3MB/s making it 31% faster than the SSDNow V Series 64GB. Moreover, the SSDNow V+180 64GB was twice as fast as the OCZ Vertex 2 40GB and 2.6 times faster than the OCZ Onyx 64GB. The program copy test is comprised of many small non-compressed files. This is where SSDs often struggle and where early-gen drives are usually slower than traditional hard drives....

In regular usage I saw just over 10% of the battery drop per hour, even when using Wi-Fi or using the display at high brightness levels, which is an admirable effort. The 17.5 Wh battery is standard as far as these sorts of tablets are concerned - for comparison, the Nexus 7 has a 15 Wh battery - plus the low screen resolution assists is lengthening the battery life as less processing power is required to render content on the display....

Lenovo has just announced the ThinkStation P360 Ultra, an SFF workstation with a volume under 4 liters. For reference, that’s a similar size to the Mac Studio, although Apple’s machine comes with an integrated PSU. The P360 Ultra comes equipped with Intel’s 12th-gen Alder Lake desktop CPUs, with the i9-12900K being the top option, and supports discrete graphics cards, up to an Nvidia RTX A5000 Mobile. It also features four SODIMM slots, allowing up to 128GB of DDR5 memory (ECC or non-ECC), two PCIe Gen 4 M....

Don’t expect the Yoga Book to provide a good gaming experience, as Intel’s Core M CPU is once again in the order of twice as fast as the Atom x5-Z8550. The Yoga Book is capable of playing lightweight Windows Store games and the occasional low intensity title from Steam, but anything more intense, including 3D games from 10 years ago, will struggle to run at 1080p. The good news is that the Atom’s HD Graphics 400 GPU is more than capable of rendering Windows 10 and its animations, so the operating system didn’t seem to lag, and if there were slowdowns, it was often while loading applications....

This is when the design really starts to make sense. On the wall, that huge glass panel, slim design and horizontally mounted graphics card come together to create what I would call art. Obviously the choice in hardware is key here and I would replace the fan on the Silverstone Argon AR05 with something black or LED lit. Likewise, I installed the Silverstone Strider ST45SF initially, but then changed it for the powerful SX600-G which also features more attractive cabling....

The cameras are offered in your choice of white, black or pink and include a mounting clip and an attached five-foot USB-C cable. The colors are said to pair nicely with Logitech’s various mice and keyboard lines to create a stylish and coordinated setup. If your system is only equipped with USB-A, you’ll also need to pick up an adapter so you’ll want to factor that into the cost if you don’t already have one handy....

December 13 was Patch Tuesday, and Microsoft used the opportunity to squash a lot of bugs in Windows and in other “products, features and roles.” The December 2022 Security Updates list includes patches for .NET Framework, Azure, Client Server Run-time Subsystem (CSRSS), Microsoft Office, SysInternals applications, Microsoft Dynamics, and of course many components found in different versions of Windows. The number of bugs fixed with December’s Patch Tuesday totals 49, six of which are classified as “Critical” which is the highest threat level....

Riley took a Brother AX-25 electronic typewriter from the late 1980s that utilizes a daisy wheel to print text and spruced it up with some modern hardware. The AX-25 features a 16-character LCD capable of editing documents stored on its 8kb of memory but of course, we can do better today. It’s still a work in progress but at this stage, the typewriter is connected to a breadboard circuit with two multiplexers that are controlled by an Arduino Uno....

While we haven’t heard much about Dishonored until now, it looks like it could be one of the year’s best for stealth fans. Corvo, the main character, is a former guard framed for murdering the Empress and he’s seeking revenge against Lord Regent, who was behind the set up. Corvo has an array of blades, firearms and supernatural powers at his disposal, including the ability to stop time and possess small animals....
