SanDisk’s drive did well in the 4K-64 thread results with a throughput of 275.7MB/s, slightly faster than the 840 Pro....
The future of magnetic storage will begin in the third quarter of 2023, as Seagate has announced its latest plans to start mass production of second-generation HAMR-based hard disks. In its latest conference call for investors, the storage giant said that the launch of its newest HDD “platform” will be “ahead of schedule,” while efforts to improve yields (and, of course, margins) are ongoing. Despite the dire situation the storage market is experiencing right now, Seagate is looking at the future: Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) uses a laser diode attached to each recording head to “momentarily heats a tiny spot on the disk,” the company explains, so that data bits written on a magnetic platter become smaller and more densely packed than ever “while remaining magnetically and thermally stable....

When measuring upload performance with a single large 6GB file, we hit Gigabit Ethernet’s limitation again, which is a little over 100MB/s. The DS1512+ was a fraction slower than the DS1511+ while providing considerably better performance than devices such as the Thecus N7700PRO. Even in our game test, the DS1512+ remains slightly slower than its elder. It’s unfortunate that the DS1512+ doesn’t raise the bar for NAS performance in these tests, but it still outperforms premium devices from QNAP and Thecus....

Tencent missed both revenue and profit forecasts in its earnings report for the second quarter as revenue fell 3% year-on-year to $19.78 billion. When testing Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, the GTX 1050 was 16% faster on average and a whopping 36% faster when comparing the minimum frame rate results, so again another disappointing result here for AMD. Mass Effect: Andromeda provides competitive numbers with both the GTX 1050 and RX 560 delivering frame rates hovering around the mid-50s. This performance was seen when using the medium quality preset at 1080p. The RX 560 edged ahead by a few frames in Dawn of War III, making it ever so slightly faster than the GTX 1050....

How do you get the best of both storage worlds? By including both ultra-fast storage and a microSD card slot. I’d use an Apple-style custom NVMe controller for extremely fast transfer speeds, which I’d then pair with 64 GB of NAND as standard. This would give you plenty of fast on-board storage for apps and games right out of the box. For those that want to add in more storage to their smartphone without paying a premium for larger capacity smartphones, I would offer a microSD card slot....
