The open letter comes from PC Gamer’s Dave James, who cites the familiar problem of supply chain issues and crypto mining leading to low supply combined with huge demand, resulting in scalpers snapping up cards to resell them at double the MSRP, and retail outlets increasing their prices. James also highlights a point many have been asking: once supply does improve and mining demand dies down, will AMD and Nvidia be willing to lower the pricing structure of their chips to pre-crisis levels, given how much money they are making from the situation right now?...

Now that the issues have been resolved and laptop makers are starting to get their latest designs out in the market, we are once again ready to bring you a list of our favorite notebooks in six different categories: Thin and light, business or general purpose, desktop replacements, gaming, budget offerings, and netbooks....

The internal Harman Kardon speakers weren’t really anything special. I wouldn’t play any sort of game with them, but they’re suitable for listening to music or watching a movie. The stereo imaging is pretty bad but that’s just a product of its placement directly in front of the user. The EQ is pretty dense and mushy in the mid range as well. The display is certainly worthy of the rest of the internal hardware....

The standard Ultrabook Keyboard, which was included with the model I received to review, has none of these features. And that’s why it’s a disappointing inclusion. The main issue I have with the Ultrabook Keyboard is its hinge design, or lack of one. The dock has just one position that the tablet sits in, which completely removes the ability to tilt or angle the display where necessary. This makes the dock less of a laptop-like extension, and more of a fixed stand for typing up documents and watching videos....

Compared to the G920, the wheel itself is exactly the same, measuring 260mm wide, 270mm tall and is wrapped in leather. All the internal hardware is also the same, so you get the helical gear system and dual-motor force feedback. The key difference can be found when looking at the wheel buttons. The directional pad, left and right stick buttons, menu button and view buttons are still the same. Technically so are the Xbox A, B, X and Y buttons, though they are now PlayStation buttons....

Think of this new breed of notebooks like a mullet - business in the front, party in the back. The Maingear Pulse 15 we will be looking at today - while still in the same class as the MSI GS70 Stealth Pro we recently covered - does have some notable differences which we will get to in a bit. But first, a rundown of Maingear’s latest is in order....

Older generation cards still have what it takes in Medal of Honor with the GeForce GTX 275 delivering 89fps while the GTX 260 averaged 77fps. The Radeon HD 4890 was considerably slower at 60fps, which was on par with the GeForce GTS 450. The Radeon HD 5770 mustered 56fps while the Radeon HD 4850 and GeForce 9800 GT averaged about the same at 44fps and 45fps. Budget graphics cards such as the GeForce GT 240 and Radeon HD 5670 bombed out with less than 40fps....

I must embarrassingly admit that I’ve never played a Metal Gear game before, though that’s partly because the series has focused exclusively on console and portable gaming devices for much of its existence, only recently becoming a regular release on PC. Created by Hideo Kojima and developed and published by Konami, Metal Gear debuted almost three decades ago in 1987 on the MSX2 (a 3.58MHz computer). Since then, MGS has often only been available on PlayStation with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance being the first modern title to hit PC, though it arrived a year after its launch on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 so it didn’t exactly make waves....

Unfortunately by the time the Surface RT launched in late 2012, it wasn’t as stellar as everyone was expecting. The ARM-based Tegra 3 SoC made the tablet feel slow and clunky to use. On top of that, Windows RT itself was void of many features found on tablets that used fully-fledged Windows 8, most notably the ability to run desktop applications. Along with the Surface RT, Microsoft also announced the Surface Pro which did run Windows 8 Pro 64-bit and came with ultrabook-class internals and a high-resolution display....

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger After disappointing fans by ditching its authentic western style with a modern-day story in 2011’s Call of Juarez: The Cartel, Techland and Ubisoft will bring the franchise back to its roots with Gunslinger. The companies promise to pay homage to the Wild West by putting you in control of a bounty hunter who’s after the period’s most notorious outlaws, including Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett and Jesse James....

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 While it reportedly sold more than two million copies, the original Sniper: Ghost Warrior received mixed reviews with complaints about its mediocre story, moronic AI, buggy gameplay and lousy run-and-gun sequences. For all its faults, many thought the game’s sniping elements were decent, and it seems that’s what City Interactive is focusing on this time around, with talk of realistic bullet physics that take into account variables such as distance, wind and heart rate, new equipment for stealth gameplay, authentic rifles, and feedback from a spotter....

NASA writes (via Space.com) that a team of doctors was last year “holoported” to the International Space Station (ISS) using the Microsoft HoloLens Kinect camera and some custom software. It allowed astronaut Thomas Pesquet to have a two-way conversation with live images of NASA flight surgeon Dr. Josef Schmid and Fernando De La Peña Llaca, CEO of software provider Aexa Aerospace, in the middle of the ISS. Holoportation allows 3D models of people to be transmitted live anywhere in real-time....

The streaming leader recently published its 2022 movie preview trailer, highlighting flicks starring A-list cast members including Jamie Foxx in Day Shift, Hustle with Adam Sandler, You People starring Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and The Gray Man with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. Netflix has been investing heavily in original content to stay ahead of the competition, and 2022 looks to be no exception. According to a report from the Financial Times late last year, Netflix was expected to spend over $17 billion on content this year....

On Thursday, the European Commission announced that EU-based airlines will now be allowed to provide in-flight wireless 4G and 5G access for all passengers. Once implemented, passengers can use their mobile devices in the same ways as any ground-based mobile network while in flight. Goodbye airplane mode; we can’t say it’s been fun. An onboard “small cell” network established using picocells will provide the in-flight service. Small cells function as miniature, low-power cell towers that augment typical cell towers by filling in coverage gaps and offloading cellular traffic....

One leading theory suggests ancient Earth was hit by an object called Theia that was roughly the size of Mars. It was previously believed that debris from the collision came together in orbit over months or years to create our satellite. The new simulations were run at the highest resolution of any sim used to study the Moon’s origins and suggest the offshoot could have been forms in a matter of hours after impact....
