Thermal throttling on phones is nothing new. Most modern devices throttle when their processor becomes dangerously hot, which helps prevent overheating and maintains the battery’s longevity. However, following the recent launch of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, we reported that several users on Twitter and YouTube noticed that the built-in Game Optimizing Service (GOS) was pre-emptively slowing down common apps without an option to turn off the performance reduction. This was corroborated by S22 owners on Korean social networking sites and forums, who noticed that apps were loading slower than expected....

The Pentium G2020 is set at 2.9GHz and lacks HyperThreading which limits it to two threads, while the i5-3337U runs at only 1.8GHz but can jump to 2.7GHz with Turbo Boost and supports four threads courtesy of HT. These configurations made for some competitive results between the two parts, though it’s worth noting that the G2020 is still pretty slow by desktop standards, so even if the i5-3337U was consistently faster – and it isn’t – it would be a small victory in the grand scheme of things....

In Dirt 2 the GeForce GTX 570 saw an average of 98fps when using a 1920x1200 resolution. This meant that the new GeForce GTX 570 graphics card was 8% faster than the GTX 480 and a whopping 36% faster than the GTX 470. It was also just 15% slower than the GTX 580 while it was an incredible 40% faster than the Radeon HD 5870. Battlefield Bad Company 2 Battlefield Bad Company 2 was tested using Fraps to record 60 seconds of gameplay from the level “Cold War”....

The reason Nvidia has dropped prices isn’t so much that they want to do everyone a favor, but rather that consumers aren’t buying GPUs at current prices....

In addition to being a fan of all things PCs and someone who builds his own rigs, Cavill has made no secret of his Warhammer obsession. The actor showed off his miniature-painting skills on Instagram back in 2020 and famously completed Total War: Warhammer 2 six times, as six different races. He also appeared on the UK’s The Graham Norton Show to explain that Warhammer isn’t the same as World of Warcraft while talking about the tabletop franchise’s painting and gaming aspects....

The overclocked HIS R9 290X Hybrid IceQ averaged 48fps in Sleeping Dogs, a 12% performance improvement over a standard R9 290X and 12% faster than the GTX 780 Ti, though it was also 8% slower than the GTX 980. The HIS R9 290X Hybrid IceQ was impressive when testing with Battlefield 4, delivering 12% more performance than a standard R9 290X. However, more importantly it was 18% faster than the GTX 780 Ti and 7% faster than the GTX 980....

The R9 290X has always been a strong contender and this HIS version is the best we’ve seen. The ability to provide on average 12% more performance than a standard R9 290X without breaking a sweat is key here. At $710, the R9 290X Hybrid IceQ is admittedly pricey, especially when quality air-cooled versions can be had for as little as $480. Paying almost 50% more for this liquid-cooled model won’t be easy to justify....

But as it is often the case with technology, there were a few minor trade-offs to be made. The biggest gripe we had was with the supplied USB cable that wrapped around the SH93 when not in use. Although it was added for convenience, we were annoyed with how clumsy and difficult it was to reattach this cable to the enclosure. We weren’t thrilled with its rather bulky design either, at least when compared to a typical 2....

Earlier in the year we compared the evenly matched Core i5-8400 and Ryzen 5 2600. Overall the R5 2600 was faster once fine-tuned, but ended up costing more per frame making the 8400 the cheaper and more practical option for most gamers (side note: Ryzen 5 is a better buy today since it’s dropped to $160). For that matchup we compared the two CPUs in 36 games at three resolutions....

In most of our tests the HTC 10 produced slightly above average battery life, passing the important five-hour barrier on our browsing tests, which tends to indicate a phone will last through a day of moderate usage without significant issues. The battery life is still behind the best smartphones out there, such as the Galaxy S7 Edge with its 3,600 mAh cell, but I don’t see any reason to complain about the stamina of this device....

The Helio X10 features eight ARM Cortex-A53 CPU cores all with the same 1.95 GHz maximum clock speed. This is an upgrade on the entry-level Helio P10, which is also an eight-core design, but uses a big.LITTLE arrangement with four cores at 1.0 GHz and four at 1.8 GHz. In other words, the Helio X10 provides a CPU clock speed boost across the board. It’s also higher clocked than the Snapdragon 617: another octa-core design with A53 cores....

Cortex-A72 is an evolution on Cortex-A57, which was ARM’s previous high-end ARMv8-A CPU core design. Announced way back in early 2015, the A72 is stated by ARM to be around 15-30% faster than the A57 on a clock for clock basis, with improved power efficiency. Interestingly, Qualcomm uses the A72 in their Snapdragon 650 series designs, so I’m not expecting it to be as fast as the company’s custom Kryo cores used in the Snapdragon 820....

With a simple tweet posted two days ago, Google has announced one of the most revolutionary changes the company is bringing to its web search service: paged results will be replaced by continuous (aka “infinite”) scrolling, so user can “continue to see more search results easily.” “When you reach the bottom of a search results page,” Google said, “you’ll now be able to see up to six pages of results” at the same time before being offered a classic “see more” button to turn the page....

We briefly touched on Windows 10 vs Windows 11 performance in our Core i9-12900K review, however this time we’re going more in-depth on the testing to draw more solid conclusions. Moreover, including VBS results is important, as this is how some systems come configured and it’s thought that since Intel did all their benchmarking with VBS enabled. Perhaps it doesn’t impact the newer architecture to quite the same degree it did older generations....

Both motherboards support ATI CrossFireX and Quad CrossFireX taking full advantage of the dual PCI Express x16 slots, however only the primary PCI Express x16 slot provides full bandwidth, while the secondary is a PCI Express x4 port (2.5GT/s). Both H55 boards utilize DDR3 memory in a dual-channel configuration and by default support DDR3-1066/1333 and 1600. These motherboards are somewhat light on SATA ports as Asrock has decided to just stick with the six ports provided by the H55 chipset....

Overclocked, the 7700K reached a stable 4.9GHz using 1.33 volts. Under full load it reached 95 degrees! That overclock boosted the Cinebench R15 score by 9% for a multi-threaded score of 1083 pts. The Core i5-7600K also hit 4.9GHz using 1.33 volts and again it was stable at this frequency. This overclock allowed for a rather impressive 16% boost in score when testing with Cinebench R15.
